Waka Flocka Flame is the stage name of American rapper Juaquin James Malphurs. The moniker “Waka” was inspired by the phrase “Waka Waka”, the popular slogan used by the Muppets character Fozzie Bear. The latter part of the stage name “Flocka Flame” was given to him by fellow rapper Gucci Mane, who used to be his mentor and main collaborator.
Waka Flame shot into the limelight in 2009 following the release of his debut single O Let’s Do It. The hit single was nominated in the “Best Club Banger” category at the 2010 BET Hip Hop Awards. The success of the single effectively launched him as a mainstream artist followed by more hit singles such as Hard in da Paint (2010), No Hands (2010) and Round of Applause (2012) featuring Drake. He has also scored other major collaborations with industry bigwigs such as Diddy, Rick Ross, Ludacris and Lil’ Wayne.
