She got her big break as a professional dancer, booking a Nike campaign and later becoming a backup dancer for pop Queen Madonna (she was at her 2012 Super Bowl Half-time performance) and even appearing in the music video for Michael Jackson‘s “Hollywood Tonight”. But 2012 was the last time Sofia Boutella danced professionally.
As a matter of fact, she quit going on tour with Madonna so she could focus on acting. Three years later, she got her acting break with the role of Gazelle in Kingsman: The Secret Service (2015). Some of her other films worth mentioning include Star Trek Beyond (2016), The Mummy with Tom Cruise and Atomic Blonde alongside Charlize Theron.
Sofia Boutella Bio (Ethnicity and Other Background Information)
Boutella was born on April 3, 1982, in Bab El Oued, Algiers, Algeria. She picked up an interest in dancing from the age of 5, however, her childhood was interrupted by the Algerian civil war which forced her parents to migrate the entire family to Paris, France where she spent the rest of her childhood. Her ethnicity is Algerian but she holds both Algerian and French nationality.
Sofia got her entertainment DNA from her father, Safy Boutella who was a jazz musician. On the other hand, her mother was an architect.
In France, Sofia continued to dance and was part of the Vagabond Crew the 2006 winners of the Battle of the Year, an international breakdancing competition.
In 2007 at the age of 25, Sofia heard from a friend that Nike was holding auditions in Paris. She auditioned and got picked earning a major break in her dancing career.
Fortunately for Sofia, the choreographer for the Nike campaigns, Jamie King happened to have pop star Madonna among his clients. As a result, Sofia’s career received a huge surge as she soon moved to America and became one of the backup dancers for Madonna.
Despite her break, Sofia didn’t neglect her education. She attended and graduated from Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts.
Sofia also got to work with other celebrities like Rihanna, Chris Brown, Ne-Yo, Usher and more. Before quitting professional dancing in 2012 to focus solely on acting, Sofia had already scored acting gigs. She played Eva in StreetDance 2.
The Mummy where she played Princess Ahmanet happens to be her biggest hit. The film made over $400 million against an average budget of $160 million.
Boutella is surely not lacking when it comes to the romantic department. Back in 2008, she was reportedly in a relationship with M. Pokora but not many details were available from that partnership including how long it lasted.
However, as of this writing, we can confirm that she is in a relationship with fellow actor Robert Sheehan best known for his roles in TV shows Misfits and Love/Hate.
According to Sheehan’s interview with Independent, he had met Boutella around 2013/2014 in India while they were both filming Jet Trash which would be released in 2016.
Upon returning to London the pair had already begun a relationship and have stuck together ever since. However, their relationship was put in question sometime in 2016 when rumors began to swirl that Sofia might be in a relationship with her Star Trek Beyond co-star Chris Pine. The genesis of the rumors was when they were spotted holding hands at Coachella in April 2017.
The “holding” turned out to be a friendly one as Sofia was discovered to still be dating Sheehan. In his 2018 interview with Independent, Sheehan who lives in Ireland described the difficulties they face as couples who both have busy work schedules.
“You’re sometimes staring at five months apart,” the actor said. “But it always works out. She gets time off and hops on a plane, I get time off and hop on a plane. The longest we ever spent apart was just six weeks,” he added.
Robert Michael Sheehan was born on 7 January 1988, in Portlaoise, Co.Laois, Ireland. He began acting professionally in 2003. His role in Love/Hate earned him an IFTA for Best Actor in a Supporting Role.
