Who Is Senator Chris Coons? Here’s Everything You Need To Know

Senator Chris Coons has built a reputation for himself as a pragmatic legislator who works hard to provide credible and effective representation for his constituents in a bid to justify the confidence reposed in him by his people. Although he is a Democrat, Senatore Coons tries to find bipartisan ways to legislate and find common grounds in a US Senate. This is because the house is divided by two ideologies (Democrat and Republican) that are always at an impasse with regards to certain key policy issues such as taxes, healthcare, immigration, foreign policy, etc.

Since joining the US Senate in 2010, he has positioned himself as an advocate for jobs, social justice, and a progressive foreign policy, among other things. This has seen him serve in Senate committees such as the Committees on Budget, Foreign Relations, Appropriations, and also Judiciary.

Senator Chris Coons – Who is He?

Senator Chris Coons is an elected junior Senator of the United States of America representing the good people of Delaware. The two-term senator is a Democrat and was elected on the platform of the Democratic Party in 2010. He was re-elected in 2014 and is currently in the US Senate. Coons is a lawyer and expert on foreign policy as well as a religious scholar. He is married to Annie Lingenfelter and together they have three lovely children, Michael, Jack, and Maggie.

Chris Coons hails from Greenwich, Connecticut, where he was born, however, he was raised in Hockessin, Delaware. Born on September 9, 1963, Coons full name is Christopher Andrew Coons and his parents are Kenelm Winslow Coons, a worker in the food industry and Sarah Louise Ives, an educationist. He is American with regards to his nationality and his ancestry is mixed – Irish and English.

For his education, Coons attended Tower Hill School in Wilmington, Delaware, after graduating from H.B. DuPont Middle School (and Yorklyn Elementary School before that). He would go on to obtain a Bachelor of Arts degree in chemistry and political science from Amherst College. While in college, he ran a program in Africa at the University of Nairobi in Kenya. Furthermore, Coons enrolled at the Yale Divinity School and Yale Law School where he obtained a masters degree in Ethics and a J.D. degree in 1992 respectively.

Career – Before Politics

Although he is best known as a US Senator, Chris Coons served as a clerk on the United States Court of Appeals for Judge Jane Richards Roth. He also worked as a legal personnel for manufacturing company, W.L. Gore & Associates, Inc. based in Delaware between 1996 and 2004. Coons also worked at several foundations including the South African Council of Churches, National Coalition for the Homeless, “I Have a Dream” Foundation, among others.

Senator Chris Coons’ first inclination in politics was as a Republican. This was evident when in 1980 as a 17-year-old, young Coons volunteered and served on the campaign trail during Ronald Reagan’s bid for the United States presidency and also for Bill Roth in 1982 when he ran for U.S. Senate. However, while in Kenya, he became a Democrat.

He ran for his first elective position in 2000 when he sought election in the New Castle County Council. He won the seat and after his first term in 2004, he was elected into the county executive. After Senator Joe Biden resigned his Senatorial seat (Delaware) in 2009 for the post of the Vice President after winning the 2008 US Presidential elections with Senator Barack Obama, Senator Chris Coons won a special election held in 2010 to fill the seat (which was temporarily filled by Ted Kaufman).

Details of their relationship or wedding are not known, however, their marriage has been blessed with three children: Mike and Jack who are twins, and a daughter, Maggie. There is no record of him being divorced at any point, and from what we can find, his marriage to Annie is his first time walking the aisle.

Senator Chris Coons’ Legacies

His time in the Senate has seen him introduce the Senate Chicken Caucus as a platform through which the chicken producers in the country could relate with the US Senate; and also the Victims of Child Abuse bill which would protect and assist children who had been abused.

In 2018, Senator Chris Coons collaborated with Senators Lindsey Graham, Thom Tillis, and Cory Booker to sponsor the Special Counsel Independence and Integrity Act bill. It was born out of the fear that President Donald Trump could fire special counsel Robert Mueller who is investigating the Russian collusion with Americans in the 2016 US elections.

The bill stipulates that if any special counsel is dismissed by the president, a judicial committee must review the dismissal in 10 days to determine whether it is justifiable or not. And if it was found to be unworthy of the ax, the special counsel would be reinstated.
