Fans are waiting in anticipation for the fate of the ABC series The Rookie. This anticipation also comes with lots of uncertainties as there hasn’t been any confirmation of a release of another season. The ABC crime drama series hit the screens in October 2018 following the release of the first season. The show became a favorite, especially among millennials, and the yearning for a second season was widespread.
Fans were heard and a second season followed in September 2019. However, The Rookie‘s continuous stay in the screens is the one thing fans are not so certain about. At the moment, there is a subtle expectation that fans may be saying goodbye to the show. There are many reasons why fans are worried about the longevity of the show but of course, it is too early to jump into conclusions. Nevertheless, here is what we know so far.
The Premise of The Rookie
John Nolan, in his mid-forties, defies the expected and ventures to become a police officer with the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD). After becoming a newly divorced dad of a college boy, he finds himself in need of a change. Nolan, also a former owner of a construction company, did not hesitate to change his career path after a life-changing experience of helping the police during a bank robbery.
He soon makes the decision to journey to Los Angeles and join the Police Academy. It works for him as he becomes the oldest graduating rookie in the academy. Joining the force, Nolan has to reconcile his age with his challenging work while he struggles to shrug off perceptions by younger colleagues that he’s having a mid-life crisis. Nathan Fillion leads the cast of The Rookie, portraying the role of John Nolan, the forty-five-year-old rookie on the force fighting crimes with the rest of the younger officers. The character has a great sense of humor and this tool of his helps him relate better with his colleagues.
Some other key actors include Alyssa Diaz who stars as Angela Lopez, a training officer with the LAPD. Richard T. Jones stars as Wade Grey, a police sergeant. He is one of those with the opinion that Nolan is having a midlife crisis and isn’t fit to be a police officer. Sweedish-American actress, Mercedes Mason stars as Zoe Andersen, a former marine at the military police and Nolan’s commanding officer. Melissa O’Neil stars as Lucy Chen, Afton Williamson stars as Talia Bishop, Eric Winter appears as Tim Bradford, and Mekia Cox plays Nyla Harper. Titus Makin Jr., who is also part of the main cast, plays Jackson West.
The Rookie’s Ratings
Between the first season and the second, The Rookie witnessed a slight drop in ratings raising more uncertainty on the possibility of another season. The first season premiered with 5.43 million U.S. viewers while the second season premiered with 4.11 million U.S. viewers. Season One of The Rookie had an overall average of 0.73 in over 4 million viewers in the 18-49 demographic, while the second season experienced a dip in ratings with a 0.57 rating with 3.7 million viewers in the same demographic.
Will There Be a Season 3 of The Rookie TV Show?
The drop in viewers, which measures a little over 20 percent, is the reason why this question has flooded the internet regarding the release of a third season. However, it could be too early to ask this question since season 2 only premiered in September 2019. But who would blame fans of the show? After all, shows like Succession and a few others were renewed for a third season almost immediately after the premiere of the second season.
This could be the same case for The Rookie but viewers and many fans of the series can only hope with their fingers crossed to see what happens. There have been no comments from the show’s creator Alexi Hawley nor from its producer Michele Greco, concerning these reports. It is probable they’re also waiting to see how things turn out. As expected, ABC is the one on the hot seat dealing with all the questions from viewers.
