In the first decade of the new millennium, fans of West Coast hip hop who were hoping that Nipsey Hussle was going to become the next big rapper out of Los Angeles, following in the footsteps of the likes of Game and Kendrick Lamar, were scared that all that promise might have disappeared due to label disputes. They also feared that he would become something similar to the likes of Papoose and Saigon, who with all due respect, never quite fulfilled their potential.
But thanks to a consistent work ethic and an unexpected cosign from Jay Z who bought 100 copies of his mixtape in 2013, prompting headlines across the entertainment world, Nipsey was able to eventually deliver a full studio album that has earned him a Grammy nomination. Read on to find out more about his life and career.
Nipsey Hussle was born Ermias Asghedom on the 15th of August, 1985, in the Crenshaw neighborhood of Los Angeles, California. His father was an Eritrean immigrant to the United States while his mother is of African American origin.
For his high school education, Nipsey attended Alexander Hamilton High School, Los Angeles where he dropped out before he was able to graduate after he was accused of breaking into the school’s computer lab. Out on the streets with nothing to do, Nipsey got involved in petty crimes which led to his arrest by the LA County Lennox Sheriff department and incarceration at a juvenile facility. When he was out, Nipsey, like almost every other person around him, joined the Rollin 60s Neighborhood Crips gang as he also began to rap.
In 2005, Nipsey Hussle was able to release his first mixtape titled Slauson Boy Volume 1. He became one of the most talked about upcoming rappers in Los Angeles in the years that followed and this landed him record deals with Cinematic Music Group and Epic Records. By 2008, Nipsey celebrated his record deals with two mixtapes: Bullets Ain’t Got No Name, Vol. 1 and Vol. 2. He then released his debut single, Hussle in the House in the following year along with the third installment of his mixtape, Bullets Ain’t Got No Name, Vol. 3. Nipsey’s biggest collaboration at the time came in 2010 when he was featured by Snoop Dogg on the song Upside Down which appeared in the album Malice n Wonderland.
With all the hype surrounding him, as he was also selected to XXL Magazine’s “Annual Freshman Top Ten” list, Nipsey was set to release his debut album, titled South Central State of Mind, in late 2010, however, following disagreements with his record label, the project was shelved and he was released from the label. Following the incident that surrounded his record deal, Nipsey Hussle decided to not go with any other label and opted to remain independent. He founded his own label through which he released several mixtapes, one of which he famously priced at $100 per copy and made available only 1,000 hard copies.
In 2018, after a total of four mixtapes, Hussle eventually released his debut album titled Victory Lap which debuted at number 4 on the Billboard 200 and received a nomination for Best Rap Album at the 61st Grammy Awards.
