It is probable that Neil Degrasse Tyson isn’t only a popular American astrophysicist but the most popular in the world. Beyond being one of the most influential technology leaders around at the moment, the man is as well regarded as one of the guys who matter in the world of science. Considering this, it wasn’t a surprise when he was in 2007 listed by Time magazine among the most influential individuals on earth; the same year he won the American Association of Physics Teachers’ Klopsteg Memorial Award.

If one must fully comprehend the extent of Neil Degrasse Tyson’s influence, all that needs to be done is to review his works, the prestigious positions he has occupied and the wealth of the fine accolades and honour he has received. From the frivolous ones like the nod he got from People magazine in 2000 as the Sexiest Astrophysicist Alive, Mr Neil can brag about bagging most of the prestigious acknowledgement one could hope for both within and outside the scope of his profession.

Neil Degrasse Tyson Bio

If you check Neil’s records, you will find that he was born on the 5th day of October 1958 and that his place of birth was in Manhattan, New York City. Raised in the city, little Neil attended public schools which eventually culminated in him graduating from the Bronx High School of Science. He would later get a BA in Physics from Harvard College (1980), a Master of Arts degree in Astronomy from Austin’s University of Texas (1983) and ultimately, a PhD in Astrophysics from Columbia University; that was in 1989.

Tyson is a research associate of the American Museum of Natural History’s Department of Astrophysics. In 2017, Neil who is also famous as a science communicator, author and actor, earned for himself the Stephen Hawking Medal for Science Communication and the Hubbard Medal of the National Geographical Society. He didn’t stop at that as he also grabbed a Grammy Award nomination for Best Spoken Word Album. This was for the science book he published the same year – Astrophysics for People in a Hurry. For one month, the book stayed at the top of the non-fiction bestseller list of the New York Time.

While there are many other thumbs-up the man has received in form of awards in recognition of his outstanding and remarkable achievements in his endeavours which we cannot completely outline here, we wouldn’t forsake pointing out that Neil Degrasse Tyson has received no fewer than 20 honorary doctorates from different famous universities; that the International Astronomical Union renamed Asteroid 1994KA to 13123 Tyson so as to honour him and, that he has been decorated with the highest award the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) can give to a non-government citizen which is the NASA Distinguished Public Service Medal

For obvious reasons, when there was a need for the United States of America to grasp the future of its Aerospace industry, President Bush (in 2001) picked Tyson as one of the guys to serve on a 12-member commission to get the job done. Three years later (in 2004), the President again appointed Neil to a 9-member commission that oversaw the implementation of the country’s Space Exploration Policy.

Owing to the foregoing and other reasons not mentioned, Neil Degrasse Tyson is being celebrated as one of the most important African-American individuals in research science. Although his professional research interests are broad, they majorly revolve around space science.
