Mare Winningham is an American actress who also doubles as a singer/songwriter. Mare started off her career as a singer when she couldn’t get a recording deal she went into acting and believe it, she has done fantastically well as an actress with so many awards, honors, and accolades to show for it.

Winningham was born in Phoenix, Arizona on the 16th of May 1959 to Marilyn Jean and Sam Neal Winningham. Her mother was an English teacher and a college counselor at Monroe High School while her father was at California State University, Northridge (CSUN) as the chairman of the Department of Physical Education
She is one of the five children born to her parents. Mare was raised in Northridge, California and attended Andasol Ave. Elementary School, Patrick Henry Junior High School, and Chatsworth High School.
Mare Winningham credits her first interest in acting to an interview of Kym Karath of The Sound of Music she watched on TV at the age of six. While at Andasol, Winningham’s interest in the arts was further developed as she joined the school’s drama group and also played drums and the guitar.
During her days at Patrick Henry Junior High School, Mare took extended drama option and in summer vacations, she studied at CSUN’s Teenage Drama Workshop and it was during this period that she picked up the nickname Mare. After her junior high studies, her mom enrolled her at Chatsworth High School where she played Maria in the school production of The Sound of Music alongside Kevin Spacey who was her classmate at the time playing Captain Von Trapp.
Before graduating from high school in 1977, Mare began writing her own songs. Between 1966 and 1977, she got a break singing The Beatles song (“Here, There and Everywhere”) on The Gong Show. Her appearance on the show, however, didn’t yield any recording contract but rather she was signed to an acting contract by Meyer Mishkin and soon received the Screen Actor’s Guild card for appearing in an episode of James at 15 doing three lines. Shortly after that, she appeared in the made-for-TV film The Death of Ocean View Park as Jenny Flowers.
In 1980, Winningham played a young prostitute in Off the Minnesota Strip, she would later win an Emmy Award for Best Supporting Actress In A Miniseries Or A Movie for playing Marlene Burkhardt in the critically acclaimed movie Amber Waves. Her other TV and film roles include Miracle Mile, St. Elmo’s Fire, The War, Turner & Hooch, Swing Vote, Dandelion, Hatfields & McCoys, Brothers, four seasons of American Horror Story: Coven, Mildred Pierce, Cult, Freak Show, Hotel, among others.
Mare Winningham has also performed on stage; in 2007, she made her New York stage debut at the Off-Broadway musical 10 Million Miles, earning a Drama Desk Award nomination. Years later in 2013, she made a debut at the revival of Picnic and the following year, she starred in the original Broadway production of Casa Valentina and was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Play.

Her second marriage was in 1981 and to William Mapel, the marriage lasted till 1996. In 2008, the actress got married again, this time to Jason Trucco. The couple went their separate ways in 2012 after four years of being together.
