Straightforward body positivity and self-acceptance/love have become her message since she learned how to accept herself in her own skin after years of struggling with her body image. The British-born model, Iskra Lawrence finally found her voice and place after being scrutinized and rejected for her size and is now the queen of body positivity. She is famous for featuring in unretouched campaigns and for actively criticizing body shaming.
Who Is Iskra Lawrence? Bio, Age
Iskra Arabella Lawrence was born on the 11th day of September 1990, in Wolverhampton, England. Her parents Doug and Wilma Lawrence moved the family to Kidderminster, Worcestershire when she was 6 weeks old. She attended an all-girls school, Malvern St James at Great Malvern and then Bromsgrove School.
Growing up, she has always dreamt to be in the limelight, particularly as a model. Thus, she started prepping for the future she envisions. Lawrence was a competitive national swimmer and became a member of the UK National Youth Theatre at 15. She landed her first modelling gig at 13 prior to puberty fully taking its course. However, when she felt it was time to debut fully, her dreams seemingly became grounded. She was dubbed too fat to model by some agencies and at the same time, too small by plus-size model agencies.
Anyone would be discouraged by these remarks but not Iskra. Though she was considered basically unfit to model, she never gave up on herself and her dream. Rather, she created her own niche. Since she could not relate to any model and no one was ready to hire models her size, she gave her voice instead. She became a voice for all sizes that seemingly don’t have a place in the commercials, media and brands. Moreover, she differed from photoshopped glamazons seen in high-fashion ads to a new way of promoting models: unretouched.
In time, she became prominent for the same reason she was almost obscured, her plus-sized physique. Having found her forte, Iskra Lawrence made sure to let everyone know the benefits of accepting and embracing their bodies just the way they are. She became very vocal about her beliefs on self-love, an act that attracted a huge amount of supporters from social media and the mainstream. Interestingly, she did not only fulfil her dream of becoming a model but also became a social media influencer and launched a digital platform, EveryBODY with Iskra which is dedicated to health and wellness. Her Instagram account boasts over 4.2 million followers.
Finally, Iskra got to that point where she no longer has her body scrutinized but rather accepted for who she is. Not that it bothered her anyway, as she has come to accept herself first. Since accepting herself, her career is now marked by straightforward body positivity and self-acceptance. The influential model and self-care advocate is represented by Agency JAG Models in New York and Models 1 in London. She has modelled for various fashion brands and also featured in many commercials and covers.
Iskra is one of the brand ambassadors for the American Eagle Outfitters lingerie line Aerie. The brand promotes all body types, promotes inclusivity and diversity through its ad campaigns and gives a nod to her unretouched campaign as they also do not retouch their pictures. She has also modelled for the lingerie brand, Adore Me.
Besides ad campaigns, she has also walked the runway for several fashion powerhouses and represents brands on several platforms. She walked the runway at the New York Fashion Week for Chromat in 2016 after 13 years of modelling and in L’Oréal’s first fashion show at Paris Fashion Week in October 2017. Also, she was announced as an L’Oréal Princes Trust Ambassador, as well as a brand ambassador for Marina Rinaldi’s Persona collection campaign in 2018.
Moreover, Iskra Lawrence got involved with NEDA (National Eating Disorders Association) as their brand ambassador and created NEDA Inspires Award for brands or campaigns that promote healthy body image, in an attempt to eradicate unrealistic body goals. To further promote the value of self-acceptance and positive body image, she gave a TEDx talk titled “Ending The Pursuit of Perfection” in February 2017 at the University of Nevada. That same year, she also appeared in the Straight Curve documentary about body image and the industry leaders challenging society’s unrealistic and dangerous standards of beauty.
Indeed, Iskra is all about everything body positivity and self-love. She has used her platform and voice to talk about something that’s so important. As such, her contributions and advocacy have not gone unacknowledged. She was chosen as one of BBC’s World’s 100 Women as well as one of the six women chosen for World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts Great Girl Leaders.
Iskra has an attractive personality and glamorous looks and as such, would have a lot of admirers. Although she has managed to keep her personal life under wraps, reports surfaced in September 2017 that she is dating a British footballer, Andre Wilson. Besides several pictures on their social media, most of which has been deleted by Lawrence, it is not known whether they are still together or just keeping away from the limelight.
