George Soros Biography
It was as György Schwartz that George Soros was born on August 12, 1930, in Budapest, Hungary. He was raised in a rich Jewish family with a father, Tivadar, who was a lawyer and an Esperantist writer, and a mother, Elizabeth who is from a rich family as well. The original name of the family was Soros, however, it changed its name for the sake of protection in an anti-Semitic Hungary to Schwartz.
During the Second World War, the family of George Soros survived by documents stating that they were Christians. His father did not only save his family during that time but many other Hungarian Jews.
Soros was off to England where he studied at the London School of Economics. He also worked as a waiter and railway porter among other things while he was still a student. By 1951, he had already gotten a Bachelor of Science in philosophy from the London School of Economics. This was then followed in 1954 by a Master of Science in philosophy.
Even though he started by handling different jobs including selling goods on the seaside, he soon realized what he wanted to do with his life was completely different. This led him to get a job with a merchant bank. All he wanted at first was to just make $100,000 and then retire. He began his career with Singer & Friedlander, then he moved to F.M. Mayer, Wertheim and Co, and then Arnhold and S. Bleichroeder where he began trying his trading skills and soon he became a serious investor.
Soros continued with his investments which would come to make him one of the richest men in the world. During the 1992 Black Wednesday UK currency crisis, he got the name “The Man Who Broke the Bank of England” after he made a short sale that made him a profit of around a billion dollars from the US$10 billion worth of short sales he made.
The billionaire is also involved in politics as a strong supporter of the liberals. He contributed towards the election of Obama as well as the failed bid of Hillary Clinton. More so, he is also a philanthropist who has donated billions of dollars to various causes.
Inasmuch as it was in a Jewish, anti-Semitic home that the Hungarian-American investor was raised, and he had to claim Christianity when he was young, George Soros does not believe in the existence of a God.
Wife (Spouse), Sons, Daughter
As regards his family life, Soros has his own fair share of relationships and has been married thrice in the past. The first time he tied the knot was in 1960 when he got married to Annaliese Witschak. The marriage was to survive until 3 children and 23 years later and then it ended in 1983.
The next woman to be the investor’s wife was Susan Weber whom he married in 1983. An American historian, Susan stayed together with George until 2005 when the marriage ended, but not without two children to show for it.
Tamiko Bolton was the next woman in his life. The two met in 2008 and soon afterward, they started dating, before getting engaged in 2012. In 2013, Soros who was 83, got married to Bolton who was then 42 years old.
From all his marriages, George Soros has five children. His first three children who were birthed to him by his first wife, Annaliese Witschak are Sons, Robert Daniel Soros and Jonathan Tivadar Soros, and daughter, Andrea Soros Colombel. His second marriage produced two sons, Alexander Soros and Gregory James Soros.
Is He Dead?
Heading for the 90s, George Soros is not as active as he used to be in his younger days. However, he is still very much alive.
In October 2018, he survived a Bomb Scare after an explosive device was found in his mailbox. While the motive of the pipe bomb was not known, Soros is a target of right-wing groups. He was not the only one to have the bomb sent to them as other famous Americans including Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, and John Brennan had pipe bombs sent to them through their mailboxes just a day after he received it.
