It’s a generally held belief that talent or greatness becomes obvious from a very young age. A child who is marked to be great in any career starts showing signs of great achievements to come right from the cradle, but the reverse is the case with Elaine Thompson, a Jamaican athlete whose best achievement before college was a paltry fourth position in the class 200 meters.

In spite of her lacklustre beginning, Elaine has broken the shackles of non-performance and has made her mark in the area of field and track event. Today, she is known worldwide as the first female Jamaican sprinter to ever win the gold in the 100 meters and 200 meters at the Olympic games, she clinched the gold ahead of Dafne Schippers of the Netherlands and this golden opportunity came at the 2016 Olympics in Rio.

Biography

Elaine Thompson, a renowned Jamaican athlete was born on the 28th of June 1992 in Manchester, Jamaica and she is a native of Banana Ground in Manchester Parish, Jamaica. Elaine was born as the only child of a poor couple and was raised by her grandmother from when she was seven years old. Her grandmother was devoted to her granddaughter and gave her all the love and care she needed to grow into a successful woman. According to her, Elaine deserved the best even if she (the grandmother) had to borrow.

Elaine’s educational background can be traced to Manchester High School where she completed her early education. In high school, she was already active in the track events although she wasn’t a star at the time. They say great athletes are known from an early age, but the reverse was the case with Elaine because her best on records was when she came fourth in the class two 100m just before she entered college at the 2009 Jamaican High School Championships. She contested in the 4×100 in Class one and also in her second year but she was kicked out of the track team due to her abysmal performance and because she was accused of being saucy by her coach and consequently, she didn’t get to participate in the events in her final year in 2011.

After graduating from high school, Elaine got admitted into the University of Technology in Kingston through an athletic scholarship. In the university, Elaine started her journey to stardom. The athlete’s constant improvement and ultimate success in track events can be attributed to coaching. Her coach Francis takes the credit for her performance and she also benefited greatly from the tutelage of Francis’ younger brother Stephen who is the chief coach in MVP Track and Field Club. Stephen is a coach who is always credited with putting athletes from Jamaica on the world map.

In 2015, the promising athlete won silver in the Outdoor World Championships in Beijing, Prior to Beijing, she has been showing signs of greatness, but she officially made herself known to the world at the Beijing competitions as a legitimate contender with a talent to make history. Her coaches’ decision that she forgoes the 100m drew criticism from the public but she compensated with an amazing 21.66 in the 200 meters final which put her in the position of the fifth fastest woman in the track events. Netherlands’ Dafne Schippers beat Elaine by .03 seconds to capture gold and become the third fastest woman in the same race.
