Fans of the Canadian-American drama series When Calls the Heart were given a hard pill to swallow when their favorite screen star, Jack Thornton (Daniel Lissing), died a tragic death at the end of the show’s 5th season. Although Daniel Lissing had been acting long before the drama series began, his role as Jack Thornton happens to be his breakthrough role, and despite his sudden exit from the show, he remains one of the most popular stars of the show.
Before his appearance on When Calls the Heart, Daniel had previously starred in several blockbuster and thriller movies, as well as TV shows. He is perhaps most notable for his role in the 2011 Australian TV drama series, Crownies, where he played the role of Conrad De Groot. In addition to that, he also played the lead role of James King in the American drama series, Last Resort before landing his breakthrough role in When Calls the Heart.
Since his exit from the show, fans have been curious, wanting to find out what happened to Daniel Lissing and the actual reason why he left the show. For the curious, we have decided to take an in-depth look into the reason why he left the show, and what the actor has been up to since then.
The Real Reason Daniel Lissing Left When Calls The Heart
Since the Hallmark series began airing in 2014, hearties – as its fans are called – have been following the dynamics of the central character Elizabeth Thatcher’s relationship with Jack Thornton (played by Daniel Lissing). Daniel’s character is a Mountie and a man of bravery and integrity. He won the hearts of many fans with his drive for protecting and saving people. Although he dislikes Elizabeth from their very first meeting, Jack later develops a strong affection for her. However, no one foresaw his exit from the show and in the manner in which it happened.
A move that big could have only been one of two things. Either he was forced to leave against his will or he chose to. However, the actor’s case was the latter as implied in his statement following his exit after the season 5 finale. The interview took place during an aftershow sit-down on Facebook live when Daniel Lissing, his co-stars, and friends Erin Krakow (who played Elizabeth Thatcher) and Lori Loughlin (who played Abigail Stanton until her exit in season 6) along with Brian Bird, one of the series executive producers discuss the sad episode and the reasons that made it so.
To dissipate the speculations as regards behind the scenes troubles that would have followed, Daniel stated that his decision to leave was informed by very personal circumstances that came up. He added that his choice to leave was respected by both the company and his co-stars, and both parties were nothing short of supportive of him. Loughlin made a point that served as a much-needed reminder at the time, that it is normal for actors to choose to renew their contract or not when it expires.
As the case may be, Lissing made the choice he thought was best for him; being supportive and wishing him well was what anyone could do for him. More so, in an appreciative Instagram post, Daniel Lissing wrote that, though unsure of what the future holds, he was excited to see what becomes of his career afterward. He may have left the series but it was as if he never did as he had the Hallmark family behind him.
What Has He Been Up To Since When Calls the Heart?
The whole departure saga went down after the last episode aired in April 2018, and by November of the same year, Lissing was back on the Hallmark channel as a co-star along with Canadian actress, Brooke D’Orsay in the romantic holiday TV film, Christmas in Love. He also made guest appearances in several episodes of the CBS crime-drama series S.W.A.T, starting with the Never Again episode in season 2.
He had another guest role as Sterling Freeman in the 9th episode of the 2nd season of the ongoing ABC drama series The Rookie. Asides his career on television, Daniel Lissing has equally appeared in many short films. Some of his most notable works include The Cure, The Answers, Entwined, The Game, Fidelity, and much more.
Is Daniel Lissing Married?
While he is enjoying a burgeoning acting career, another important aspect of Lissing’s life that has been keeping him busy is his love life. The actor has been in a relationship with his partner, identified only as Nadia, for some time now. They both live together, and he often shares pictures of their special moments on social media platforms, especially Instagram.
Interestingly, after Daniel Lissing posted photos of them exploring the world together, the actor gave his followers and fans – especially hearties – a piece of pleasant news. He took to Instagram to announce his engagement to his girlfriend with a lovely picture of them kissing and Nadia showing off her new rock. The short but sweet caption simply stated that he will marry the love of his life.
It was later gathered that the proposal took place in their shared home in October 2019. It was on Nadia’s birthday, and by Lissing’s account, he kept it very simple. Nadia also shared the happy news on her Instagram account (@jegdiva), with a caption that says she can’t imagine spending her life with anyone else. While wedding plans are underway, we wish the couple a blissful marital journey in advance.
