Three blonde Oscar-nominated bombshells – Charlize Theron, Margot Robbie, and Nicole Kidman – recreate the Fox News sexual scandal in the upcoming Jay Roach‘s movie, Bombshell. The trio portrayed the women who brought down the infamous founder of the media empire, Roger Ailes with accusations of sexual harassment.

The film will hit US theaters in December 2019. While we await its release, let’s get down to facts to know about the film.

The Real Story Behind Bombshell

Bombshell is an exposé providing a look into the Fox News sexual assault scandal. From the film’s synopsis, Bombshell gives a revealing look into the most powerful and controversial media empire of all time. It also covers the explosive story of the female employees whose allegations against media mogul, Roger Ailes, took him down.

Deeds of his past were unceremoniously brought to light in 2016 when Fox News anchor, Gretchen Carlson filed a lawsuit against him. The lawsuit came two years after Gabriel Sherman released a written biography of Ailes titled The Loudest Voice in the Room. Therein, he alleged that the media mogul offered a TV producer a raise in exchange for sex in the 1980s.

Carlson filed a lawsuit on allegations of sexual harassment and misconduct, after she came across the book. She claimed that Roger did the same to her; he sabotaged her career by firing her wrongly when she refused his sexual advances. He did not just sabotage her career, according to Carlson, Ailes also delayed her pay, made her schedule unfavorable, and denied her some hard-hitting interviews before eventually firing her.

It wasn’t long after her lawsuit, another female employee, Megyn Kelly, stepped forward with fresh accusations of sexual abuse as detailed in her book. These women’s stories inspired confidence in six or seven others who also came out with similar accusations. It also formed the basis for the upcoming film.

Bombshell was written by Oscar-winning The Big Short screenwriter Charles Randolph and directed by the Game Change and Austin Powers director, the iconic Jay Roach.
