Being the face of the United States women’s national team and the most successful soccer player in the nation, it is no surprise that Alex has an estimated net worth of $3 million (£2.4m).
As a result of her successful career, the striker has an intimidating profile when it comes to endorsement deals, and even though she makes money from her soccer team contracts, a larger chunk of her net worth comes from her sponsors. Additionally, the Olympic gold medallist is also involved in some other ventures through which she makes money.
This Is How Alex Morgan Achieved Her Net Worth
Alex Morgan’s base salary, currently, is said to be in the region of $450,000 per annum, and with this, she took the third position on the list of the world’s highest-paid female soccer players in 2020. A report by Orlando weekly revealed that members of the U.S. Women’s National Team like Alex are paid a salary of $56,000, which is $16,300 more than the maximum salary of non-national team members. In a 2016 article by the same media house, the difference in the salaries of men and women in the national teams was detailed.
According to the complaint, women in the national team receive a base salary and bonus of $72,000 and $1,350 respectively, if they win a game. Also, if the team plays the required 20 friendly matches and ends up winning all, a player could be paid $99,000. However, players on the men’s national team could be paid $263,320 if they win all 20 friendly games and even if they won none, they’d still be paid $100,000. While players on the women’s team get no extra pay if they play more than 20 matches, each of their male counterparts can be given $5,000 to $17,625 for additional games, according to an ESPN report.
The discrepancies notwithstanding, Alex Morgan is doing well for herself. The Orlando Pride striker earned $3.5 million in 2017 and in 2019 she earned $250,000 as per Forbes. She also took the 10th spot on Forbes’ list of highest-paid female athletes in 2020, which was published on August 17, 2020, and was the highest-earning non-tennis player on the list with a total earning of $4.6 million of which $400,000 came from her salary/bonus.
As stated earlier, the bulk of Alex Morgan’s earnings stems from endorsement deals, which contributes heavily to boosting her overall yearly income. In June 2015, Times named her the highest-paid American women’s soccer player, basically as a result of her endorsement deals. In 2019 and 2020, she made $4.2 and $5.5 million respectively from her sponsorship deals with big brands such as AT&T, Coca-Cola, McDonald’s, Panasonic (PCRFY), Chobani, Nike, Chapstick, and Bank of America.
Alex Morgan sealed an endorsement deal with Bank of America in July 2011 and in January of the following year, she landed a brand ambassador role for General Nutrition Centers, a company that deals in health and nutrition-related products. Also in 2012, she promoted the video game Just Dance 4 on behalf of Ubisoft. The celebrity soccer star also appeared in a Bridgestone TV commercial in 2013 and in October of the same year, she got into a two-year partnership deal for GlaxoSmithKline’s lip balm brand known as ChapStick.
In 2015, Alex appeared in a commercial for Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company that was aired in the whole of the United States. That same year, she became one of the first three women soccer players to appear on the cover of FIFA soccer video games and even graced the cover a second time in 2016 alongside Messi, Christine Sinclair, and Steph Catley. In FIFA 19 video game, Alex Morgan is credited with a voice role as she appeared all through The Journey as an interactive character.
She appeared in commercials for the American strained yogurt company named Chobani in 2016 and also became a UNICEF Kid Power Champion the same year. Two years later, she became one of the ambassadors of Molecule, a mattress and bedding company that produces athlete recovery mattresses.
Books and TV Series
In addition to her soccer career and endorsement deals, Alex Morgan also makes money from writing books. She entered into a contract with Simon & Schuster in 2012 to write a four-book series titled The Kicks. The series, which is for middle schoolers, centers on four girls and explores several themes such as soccer, friendship, and leadership. Speaking through a statement released by the publishing house, Alex stated that she intends to inspire young girls through the books and also celebrate the love she has for soccer.
On the 14th of May 2013, the first part of the novel titled Saving The Team was released and it debuted at number seven on The New York Times Best Seller list for Children’s Middle Grade. Three months later, the second part called Sabotage Season was released. Alex Morgan and David Babcock subsequently created a teen sitcom based on the books. The sitcom, called The Kicks, started airing on Amazon Prime Video on June 26, 2015, and it received mostly positive reviews on Amazon.
Media and Commerce Company
In March 2021, Alex Morgan’s income stream increased as she and three other Olympic gold medalists came together to launch a new media and commerce company known as “Toghethxr”. Behind the new venture, which is focused on women and aimed at elevating the voices of women, are basketball star Sue Bird, snowboarder Chloe Kim, swimmer Simone Manuel, and of course Alex Morgan.
According to the information published on sportspromedia.com, funds for running the company will be provided by a private equity holding firm named Magnet Companies. The same firm will also be responsible for running the operations of the new company and as reported by New York Times, Magnet Companies made a ‘mid-seven figure investment’ into Toghethxr.
Speaking to the New York Times, the chief content officer of Togethxr, Jessica Robertson, listed several things that the company will be doing and they include creating original content, partnering with social media platforms, signing licensing contracts, and selling merchandise. She also said that the major target audience of the company were young women and girls who are interested in topics like activism, sports, culture, beauty, and wellness.
Togethxr is expected to generate revenue through its own media studio, consumer products, and sponsorship deals.
