Is Monica Lewinsky Married or in a Relationship, Who Is Her Husband or Boyfriend?

Monica Lewinsky is not married and has never been married. Even though she has been tight-lipped about her love life ever since she was embroiled in a political sex scandal with US President Bill Clinton in the late 1990s. Regardless, we know for sure that she has never been married. Monica has admitted to having been in a few relationships since that time but she has refused to reveal the identities of the people she dated.

What We Know About Monica Lewinsky’s Love Life

Ever since Monica came back to being active on social media, joining the #MeToo movement, and giving Ted talks, there have been numerous speculations about whom the former White House intern may have been involved with.

Monica once complained about the things she felt she lost as a result of the scandal between her and the ex-president, stating that she wanted a job, kids, and a husband – things she believed her notoriety robbed her off. In a Vanity Fair article in 2014, Monica explained her need for extreme caution when it came to discussing who was in her life and we cannot blame her at all for it.

The 50 year old however did admit that she had been in several relationships (and suffered a few heartbreaks too) over the past few years but refused to reveal who the people she dated were, nor did she drop any hints about their identities. She did confirm one thing though – Monica Lewinsky is not married.

She said this in an interview with PEOPLE magazine, stating that she hasn’t tied the knot with anybody yet, and was completely comfortable with the fact that she might never do.

So far, the only known family that Lewinsky is part of remains her birth family comprised of parents Bernard Lewinsky and Marcia Lewis, and younger brother Michael. In August 2021, she jokingly commented that the love of her life was peanut butter – which might be a Monica Lewinsky code for saying ‘I’m still single!’. Whatever the truth about Monica’s love life might be, it is still admirable that she has been able to pick her public image out of the gutter it was in, these past 21 years.

The Clinton – Lewinsky Scandal

The shameful affair was the talk of the whole country, (and the world), from 1999 till the early 2000s. However, the events that led to the scandal widely known as The Clinton – Lewinsky Scandal, happened a little while earlier.

After graduating from the Lewis & Clark College at 21, Monica was offered an unpaid internship at the White House, specifically in the office of the Chief of Staff, in 1995. At the time, it seemed like the best thing that could have happened to the young lady whose wealthy family had secured the position through a series of highly-networked connections.

However, it turned into a nightmare for Lewinsky who was ill-fated to begin a personal relationship with Bill Clinton, then-president of the United States. The affair went on from 1995 to 1997 and continued even after Lewinsky was transferred to the White House Office of Legislative Affairs.

It was recorded that she and the president had a total of 9 sexual encounters, but that there was no sexual intercourse between the two of them. She later confided in her co-worker, Linda Tripp, and told her about the affair.

In a move that made many people wonder why, Linda began to secretly record Monica’s conversations. The affair came to public light during the infamous Watergate Scandal after Linda learned that Monica had sworn an affidavit denying any relationship with the president.

Linda decided to “leak” the recorded phone conversations to the FBI, and a new scandal involving Bill Clinton was born. The fallout from the discovery led to a series of court cases and hearings which dominated the news headlines in 1998.

Monica Lewinsky Was Unable To Get A Job Many Years After The Affair

Actions always have consequences, sometimes heavy and unbearable ones. No one would understand this better than Monica Lewinsky. It was a very difficult period for her and what made it especially worse, was that everything happened on a national scale, in full public glare. The amount of public scrutiny she experienced made it hard for her to get a job as no company was willing to be associated with her.

The experience totally dehumanized her and the sexist undertones to the public shaming she endured did not go unnoticed, especially as they were rarely applied to ex-president Clinton. Slurs like ‘whore’, ‘slut’ and ‘bimbo’ became her new identity. Unfortunately, her immunity agreement restricted what she could talk about in public, so basically, every other person told her story except her.

The young woman, nevertheless, was very determined to put the past behind her and immediately set to work, trying to rebuild her brand. In March 1999, she collaborated with author Andrew Morton for her biography, Monica’s Story, and earned about $500,000 from the contract. She also made a guest appearance on ABC’s 20/20 talk show, where she was interviewed by host Barbara Walters.

According to several reports, she made a million dollars as compensation for her International rights to the footage. It should have been a beautiful start for the 23-year old but she was overwhelmed by a lot of legal expenses and needed a regular income.

Monica later signed a million-dollar deal with weight loss company, Jenny Craig, but later lost the contract because the company didn’t want any issues with their customers who were disgruntled with Lewinsky’s involvement with them; she was eventually paid only 30% of the initially agreed price with the company. Monica soon realized that she couldn’t run away from the ghosts of her past as she kept losing multiple endorsements for the latter part of 1999 and 2000.

Her entrepreneurial attempt to launch a line of knitted handbags under her name failed woefully and it seemed like Lewinsky couldn’t catch a break anywhere. She also made appearances on shows like The Tom Green Show, America Undercover, The View, Jimmy Kimmel Live, and the dating reality TV show, Mr. Personality as the show’s host.

As the host of the latter, the show’s viewership ratings dropped lower and lower until the show was canceled. Eventually, she ran to London and hid from the media for almost 10 years.

Reemerging From Hiding

While in London, Lewinsky decided to go back to school, and in 2006, she obtained her master’s degree in Social Psychology from the London School of Economics. She then surfaced in 2014 after over a decade and a half to tell her own story in an essay titled “Shame and Survival“, which she wrote for Vanity Fair magazine.

In the essay, she talked about her life and the scandal; she still maintained that although the former President who was twenty-seven years older than her took advantage of her, that the relationship between them was consensual.

The essay was the 2015 National Magazine Award finalist. She later revealed in another essay that she suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder and feelings of isolation after the sex scandal and investigations that followed afterward.

Today, Monica is a stronger woman, a TV personality, and a social activist who speaks up against cyberbullying, with an emphasis on bullying prevention. She has lent her voice to a lot of important causes, especially those concerning women.

In 2017, she joined several Hollywood celebrities who came out to share their experiences and campaign against sexual harassment and assault in the industry with the #MeToo hashtag. Monica was also a speaker on TED on the topic: The Price of Shame; the most-watched Ted talk of all time as of 2015. Currently, she is working as a co-producer for the FX series, Impeachment: American Crime Story.
