All these were as a result of Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection. Tommy Morrison’s net worth before his death is not clear but multiple sources have estimated it to be around  $10,000.

There are reports that the main cause of Tommy Morrison’s death was full blown AIDS viral infection. His career as a boxer came crashing after he tested positive to HIV in 1996. Before contracting HIV, Tommy Morrison was a WBO heavyweight champion (1993) and was enjoying a successful boxing career.

What Was The Cause Of Tommy Morrison’s Death?

According to the Nebraska Department of Health & Human Services where Tommy Morrison died, his death was caused by cardiac arrest that came as a result of multi-organ failure due to septic shock. This was after he was diagnosed with Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection.

His mother also revealed that he had full blown AIDs and it is believed that the root cause of his death may have been HIV and AIDS. However, neither Tommy, nor his wife, Trisha, believed that he had the deadly virus.

Because of Tommy and Trisha’s denial of his HIV status, many have been forced to believe that Tommy died as a result of that denial. This was because he refused to accept treatment for HIV and his refusal to cooperate with doctors resulted in his early death.

Tommy Morrison Was Diagnosed With HIV In 1996

Morrison started his professional boxing career in 1988. From 1988 to 1995, his career kept blossoming. In 1993, he defeated George Foreman to become the WBO Heavyweight champion. His boxing matches were A list contests that people looked forward to watching. However, his career took a bad turn in 1996.

Few hours before he had a fight with Arthur Weathers, the Nevada Athletic Commission discovered that Tommy was HIV positive. By February 15th 1996, Tommy Morrison announced that he would be retiring from boxing due to his HIV positive status. According to him, he contracted HIV due to his permissive, fast, and rough lifestyle.

During his retirement announcement, he said he would never fight again, but he couldn’t keep to his word. By September 1996, he was already seeking to fight again. Unfortunately for him, the Nevada Athletic Commission had suspended him from fighting in Nevada, so he had to look for somewhere else to fight.

George Foreman invited him for a fight in Japan where HIV positive people were not prohibited from fighting. However, one of the major rules of the game was that immediately Morrison had a cut, the match would end. Fortunately for Tommy Morrison, the match did not end abruptly and he won the fight in regulation time.

He continued to fight in other cities until his HIV status became an issue again in 2011 when the province of Quebec RACJ, the boxing commission required him to take a HIV test before he would be permitted to fight. That same year, he retired again from boxing.

How Did Tommy Morrison Get AIDs?

Tommy Morrison got AIDS by having unprotected sex with women and according to ESPN.com, he lived in denial of his HIV status. Meanwhile, he was diagnosed with the disease in 1996 and he admitted to it during his retirement announcement.

However, along the line, Tommy made a U-turn, refusing to agree that he was HIV positive. As at 1997, he was still having unprotected sex with his first wife (details about the number of wives he married are not available). He started dating Trisha Morrison in 2009 and they got married in 2011, and he was also having unprotected sex with her despite the news that he was HIV positive.

Tommy Morrison

As long as Tommy Morrison was concerned, he was never HIV positive. He was convinced that he didn’t have the virus so he also refused to take his drugs. He was of the belief that the idea of HIV therapy was only a propaganda and he wasn’t going to fall for it.

Magic Johnson, who had also been diagnosed of the deadly virus at the time tried to reach out to Tommy to encourage him to work with his doctor, but he didn’t accept the advice. Rather, he kept looking for ways to continue boxing, while still having unprotected sex.
