Is Gavin Newsom Related To Nancy Pelosi? Here’s What We Know

Gavin Newsom and Nancy Pelosi are not relatives but were once connected through a marriage that left Nancy in the place of an aunt to Gavin for over a decade.

As you would easily find, Nancy got married to Paul Pelosi in 1963, this was about seven years after Paul’s older brother, Ron Pelosi, married his first wife, Belinda Barbara Newsom. Now, Belinda is Gavin’s aunt and her marriage to Ron came to an end in 1977. So for roughly 14 years, Nancy was at best, some sort of an aunt to Gavin, if one must insist they were once related.

You might be forgiven for not knowing who Gavin Newsom is but Nancy Pelosi is one of the most powerful women in politics, not only in America but the world at large. She currently serves as the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, a position she previously held from 2007 to 2011.

Gavin gained massive exposure in January 2019 when he became the 40th governor of California. Before this, he was the lieutenant governor of the state and had served as the mayor of San Francisco, from 2004 to 2011. Like Nancy, Gavin is a member of the Democratic Party, and outside of his aunt’s failed marriage to Nancy’s brother-in-law, Ron Pelosi, they are not related in any way.

Gavin Newsom’s Aunt was Once Married to Nancy Pelosi’s Brother-in-Law and That Is The Only Way They Were Related

Gavin Newsom and Nancy Pelosi are not related by blood, only through family ties and respectively, through an aunt and a brother-in-law. Gavin Christopher Newsom was born on the 10th of October 1967 in San Francisco, California, to Tessa Thomas (née Menzies) and her husband William Alfred Newsom III. William was not the only child of his parents. He had a sister named Belinda Barbara Newsom. Barbara, as she was mostly known, was the aunt of Gavin Newsom and the only link the governor has with the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives.

More than the fact that she was Gavin’s aunt, the powerful woman who was appointed by President Jimmy Carter to represent the United States at the United Nations was also the sister-in-law of Nancy Pelosi. Yes, Barbara and Nancy were married to the Pelosi brothers, Ron and Paul Pelosi. It was in 1956 that Barbara got married to Ronald Virgil Pelosi, better known as Ron Pelosi. As fate would have it, the union came to an end in 1977, and in 1979, Ron got married to his second wife, Susan Ferguson.

About seven years into the Barbara-Ron marriage, Ron’s younger brother, Paul Francis Pelosi Sr., got married to Nancy D’Alesandro who became a member of the Pelosi family and adopted the family’s name as her last name. With the marriage, Barbara and Nancy became sisters-in-law. By extension of that, Nancy became a sort of aunt to Gavin, the nephew of her sister-in-law, Barbara. Like her older brother, Barbara is no more, she passed on the 22nd of November 2008 at the age of 73 while her brother, Gavin’s father, died 10 years later, on the 12th of December 2018 at the age of 84.

Gavin is a Fourth-Generation San Franciscan While Nancy was Born to an Italian-American Family in Maryland

The family background of Gavin Newsom and Nancy Pelosi shows that they had no relationship, whatsoever, until Nancy became Paul Pelosi’s wife in 1963. As you would easily find, the speaker of the House hails from an American family of Italian heritage whereas Gavin’s is rooted in San Francisco, California. The governor of California currently fighting off a recall election is a fourth-generation San Franciscan. The Newsoms are one of the most powerful families in San Francisco. His father, William Alfred Newsom III, was an administrator of the Getty Family Trust and a state appeals court judge.

For Nancy, her family’s background has been traced to Italy both maternally and paternally, even though she was born in the most populous city of Maryland – Baltimore. The Speaker was the youngest and the only female among the seven children born to her parents; Thomas D’Alesandro Jr. and Annunciata M. “Nancy” D’Alesandro (née Lombardi). Her mother Annunciata was born in South Italy, precisely in Fornelli, a municipality located in the Province of Isernia under the Molise region of Southern Italy. Records have it that she immigrated to the United States in 1912.

Unlike her mother, Nancy’s father was born in America, also in Baltimore, Maryland. While his father, Nancy’s grandfather Tommaso G. D’Alesandro was born in Montenerodomo, located in Abruzzo, Italy, his mother was born in Baltimore to parents who immigrated into America from Genoa, the capital of Liguria in north-western Italy.

Gavin Newsom and Nancy Pelosi Both Come From Powerful Political Families

Gavin Newsom’s family is a powerful and popular one. When he emerged as the governor of California, it was vastly expressed that he would be succeeding someone who is more like an uncle to him, Jerry Brown. His victory was seen as a continuation of the reign of four, intertwined and powerful San Francisco families – the Newsoms, the Browns, the Gettys, and the Pelosis. These families have sustained a relationship that has helped them remain powerful over several decades. Gavin’s grandfather, William A. Newsom II, helped Jerry Brown’s father, Pat Brown, become the 32nd governor of California, serving from 1959 to 1967.

While Nancy Pelosi was married into a prominent family known for their exploits in business and public service, her birth family is also a powerful family in politics. Her oldest brother, Thomas Ludwig John D’Alesandro III, was a prominent attorney and politician who served as the 43rd Mayor of Baltimore from 1967 to 1971. Thomas passed in October 2019 at the age of 90.

Also, her father Thomas Ludwig John D’Alesandro Jr. was a politician. He served as the 39th Mayor of Baltimore from 1947 to 1959. Before this, he represented Maryland’s 3rd congressional district in the United States House of Representatives from 1939 to 1947. The man died in August 1987 at the age of 84.

The Politicians Are Both Married To Popular Figures

The U.S. House speaker has been married to Paul Pelosi since 1963 and they have five children together. Her husband is a famous businessman who owns a real estate and venture capital investment/consulting company called Financial Leasing Services Inc.

Gavin is currently married to Jennifer Siebel Newsom. He got married to the documentary filmmaker and actress in 2008. Jennifer has written, directed, and produced films like Miss Representation (2011) and The Mask You Live In (2015). In her role as the spouse of the governor of California, Mrs. Newsom chooses to be addressed as First Partner instead of First Lady, a title used by all her predecessors.

Before Jennifer, the governor was married to Kimberly Guilfoyle, a media personality famed for serving as an advisor to the 45th president of the United States, Donald Trump. Gavin and Kimberly got married in 2001 but filed for divorce in January 2005. Their separation was finalized in February 2006.
