The end of human life as we know it is a topic that has long fascinated people and this fascination is often represented in films. There is a large group of people who believe that the annihilation of human life will come as a result of a zombie apocalypse and the 2009 apocalyptic horror film, Zombieland is one of the many films that represent this notion. This horror film was so successful that a sequel Zombieland: Double Tap has been made.
Zombieland – Background Details
In 2005, writers Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese had the drive for a zombie story, their earliest ideas involved writing the story for a television show and the first thing they wrote was for a pilot which will be the foundation on which they will build their story. All of this changed when the writing duo met with Ruben Fleischer who went on to become the director of the film.
The first Zombieland film is a horror film that deviates from the usual norm of horror stories that are completely frightening and infuses elements of humor. The film features four major characters who are one of the few survivors of a disease that has ravaged the population of the United States, turning a majority of them into Zombies. As a result of the rising death rate, people have become disillusioned with relationships and have learned to detach themselves from other people as death could come for anyone at any time. One of the ways the survivors have learned to cope is by discarding their real names and instead chose to go by the name of the states they come from. This way, there is a sort of detachment from the self and makes it difficult for them to connect to other people. This is why the four major characters are named after states in America.
Columbus and Tallahassee are the first people we meet, the former is a student who is heading home to find out if his parents are still alive while the latter is a loner who has perfected the skill of killing zombies. The two are later joined by sisters, Wichita and Little Rock, the sisters try to con them and are successful at it, but in the end, four of them decide that working together is the best hope for their survival.
The sequel, Zombieland: Double Tap is expected to have as much success as the first film and the name is a reference to one of the forty-nine rules that the character Columbus lives by which for him is the best way to survive the zombies.
Zombieland: Double Tap Release Date
The first film was made on a budget of $23.6 million and in less than a month, the film had made back its budget from box office sales. Zombieland is currently the second highest-grossing horror feature film of all time. Critical reception of the film was also great as critics praised the storyline, acting, directing and costume design.
The success of this film was an encouragement for the writers to begin work on a sequel and by 2018; Sony Pictures gave the go-ahead for the film’s production. Zombieland: Double Tap is expected to hit cinemas on the 18th of October, 2019. However, the writers have not revealed any specifics about the expected sequel. It is however clear that the film will continue from the events in the first film but this time, the characters will be dealing with a much more evolved enemy. Wernick and Reese have hopes of making it into an entire franchise that will continue for many years.
Is Bill Murray Coming Back in Zombieland: Double Tap?
The first Zombieland film featured four major characters but when Wernick and Reese wrote the film’s script, they had the idea to feature an actor who would play himself. They had gone through a number of actors before settling on Bill Murray.
Bill Murray is one of the survivors of the disease but he has decided to wear zombie makeup as a disguise which enables him to move about without being noticed but he gets shot by Tallahassee who mistakes him for a real zombie. The shot was fatal as it killed him but the twist is that he is expected to reprise his role in Zombieland: Double Tap, the way he will be incorporated into the story is one that fans cannot wait to find out.
