There is always an underlying notion that you need to get an early start to ensure success in any career choice, especially if it has anything to do with the entertainment arena. That notwithstanding, Yalitza Aparicio, a Mexican actress in her mid-twenties, snagged one of the coveted recognitions in the history of Hollywood. Interestingly, she did this with just a single appearance in a movie which was the only item in her filmography.
The most fascinating thing about her chronicle of success is that Yalitza nailed her first role as an actress without getting any form of training to prepare her for the task. For what it’s worth, she has no background or family history in the entertainment industry; she was able to achieve what she is being revered for today all by herself.
Are there more intriguing facts about this Mexican actress who went from being a preschool teacher to storm the spotlight? Let’s find out together.
Who Is Yalitza Aparicio?
On the 11th of December and in the year 1993, the birth of the Mexican actress was registered in Heroica Ciudad de Tlaxiaco, Oaxaca. Her father whose identity and occupation are not known is Mixtec while her mother, a maid, is Triqui. It is said that her mother raised her as a single mom but she managed to give her a sound education. Though she never went to any film school or got any training in the performing arts, Yalitza holds a degree in early childhood education while another one in pre-school education is in the works. Details about the schools she attended as a child have not been made public.
There is nothing that can be credited regarding what inspired her venture into acting as she never considered building a career in the profession. In fact, she landed the role of her debut appearance in 2018 after her sister, whom she accompanied to the audition, developed cold feet; Yalitza decided to give it a try instead. One thing is clear though, portraying the character of Cleo in Alfonso Cuarón’s 2018 hit drama, Roma, made her an instant Hollywood star. The role has seen her feature on many award lists within such a short period of time.
The most popular of her award nominations is the 2019 nod for the Academy Award in the category of Best Actress. Her sudden rise to fame made her the first indigenous woman (Native American) to get an Oscar nomination in the Best Actress category. She is equally the second Mexican woman to get the honor, coming after Salma Hayek who was nominated for her role in Frida (2002). The Academy Awards has also nominated three other Mexican women in the Best Supporting Actress category, they include Katy Jurado (1954) for her role in Broken Lance, Adriana Barraza (2006) for playing a character in Babel, and Marina de Tavira (2018) for her role in Roma.
At the 2019 Oscars, the Mexican actress will be up against industry bigwigs like Lady Gaga (A Star Is Born), Olivia Colman (The Favourite), Melissa McCarthy (Can You Ever Forgive Me?) and veteran actress Glenn Close (The Wife).
Between 2018 and 2019, Yalitza Aparicio got other nominations beyond the Oscars. She was nominated in the same category by the Chicago Film Critics Association, Critics’ Choice Movie Awards, Hollywood Film Awards (which she won), Gotham Awards, San Francisco Film Critics Circle, Satellite Awards, as well as the Women Film Critics Circle. She has also been recognized by prestigious tabloids like Time and The New York Times.
As incredible as it may sound, Yalitza Aparicio really achieved these great feats within a year and without going to any high-profile training school for thespians. However, to play her role in Roma well, she had to learn the Mixtec language which she is not fluent in, even though she has roots with the people.
How Tall Is She?
Perhaps as a result of her rookie status in the spotlight, Yalitza Aparicio has not shared much details about herself, including the details of her body measurements. However, from the obvious, she is not to be categorized as a tall woman and she sports a sturdy/athletic body type. The actress has black long hair that perfects her eyes of the same color.
