William H Macy is a Hollywood actor popular for playing in small independent films. Born March 13th, 1950, in Miami, Florida, to William Hall Macy, Sr. and Lois Overstreet, the actor grew up in Maryland and Georgia.

His father was an Air Medal for flying a B-17 Flying Fortress bomber during the Second World War and a recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross Award. After Macy Sr. retired from the military, he ran a construction company in Atlanta, Georgia for a while, then worked for Dun & Bradstreet before working for an insurance based company in Cumberland, Maryland. His mom married his father after her first husband died during WW II.

Macy attended Allegany High School Cumberland, Maryland, where he graduated from in 1968 and headed to Bethany College, West Virginia, where he began studying veterinary medicine which he abandoned after a while and transferred to Goddard College to study under playwright David Mamet.

His Career

After graduating from Goddard in 1972, Macy began his career by playing in some of Mamet’s plays like The Water Engine and American Buffalo. While in Chicago, William H Macy joined AFTRA in order to do a TV commercial and within a year, he earned his SAG card.

He stayed in L.A briefly before moving over to New York City in 1980. While in NYC, Macy performed in over fifty Off-Broadway and Broadway plays. He soon began to get some on-screen roles too and one of his earliest was as Socrates (turtle) in a 1984 direct-to-video film The Boy Who Loved Trolls, he also got a minor role as a hospital orderly on the 4th season of the sitcom Kate & Allie which aired on CBS from 1984-1989.

He also appeared as an assistant district attorney in Everybody’s Favorite Bagman and played a brief role in Law & Order. Macy has appeared in countless other movies written and directed by Mamet, some of them include the Spartan, House of Games, State and Main, Homicide, Wag the Dog, Oleanna and Things Change. In 2007, William H Macy starred in Wild Hogs. In 2009, he starred in The Maiden Heist alongside Christopher Walken and Morgan Freeman.

In 2009, he replaced Jeremy Piven in Mamet’s Speed-the-Plow on Broadway after Piven dropped out due to health issues. He also starred in a 2010 comedy-drama film Dirty Girl, alongside Tim McGraw, Juno Temple, Mary Steenburgen, and Milla Jovovich. In the summer of 2010, William began playing Frank Gallagher, the protagonist on Showtime’s Shameless. He would later receive high critical acclaim for his performance which eventually earned him an Emmy nomination in 2014 for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series.

He made his directorial debut in 2012 with the independent drama Rudderless. The movie starred the likes of Selena Gomez, Felicity Huffman, Laurence Fishburne, and Billy Crudup. He also directed The Layover in 2017 which starred Kate Upton and Alexandra Daddario.

William H Macy played a grandpa in a 2015 drama film Room, which also featured his Pleasantville costar, Joan Allen. The film was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture. So far in his career, the Hollywood actor has won 4 Screen Actors Guild Awards, 2 Emmy Awards and an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

The American actor is said to be currently worth $25 million, which are earnings from his over four decades acting career. He reportedly earns $125 Thousand per episode from the British TV series Shameless.

Macy has been married to stage, film, and TV actress Felicity Huffman since 1997. The couple dated off and on for fifteen years before finally tying the knots in September 1997. Together, they have two adorable daughters – Sophia Grace and Georgia Grace.  Sophia was born in December 2000 and Georgia came along two years later on the 14th of March 2002.

In 2008, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce announced the couple would each be receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame the following year.

The actor was previously married to Carla Santos Shamberg from 1980 to 1985.
