If a list of the most successful film series were to be made, the Fast and Furious franchise would definitely make the cut for it is Universal Pictures’ most successful and biggest franchise. With a combined gross of $5 billion across all of its films up to the 8th installment, it is the 10th highest-grossing film series of all time! The racing-focused film series released her first of many films to come in 2001. All of the films have been commercial hits and though the earlier ones received mixed to lukewarm reviews from critics, the later versions have fared far better critically. Unsurprisingly a 9th film is already in the works as Universal Pictures continues to break records. Let’s take you through all there is to know about Fast and Furious 9.
Will There Be A Fast and Furious 9?
To answer that question quickly, Yes! There will be a Fast and Furious 9 and why wouldn’t there be? The box office returns of every movie on this franchise have been staggering and filmmaking is all about the money after all.
Talks for a 9th installment had begun even before the release of the 8th film, The Fate of the Furious which was released in 2017. The franchise had announced that the series would end with a 10th installment which many are speculating would be titled, Fast X with a release date slated for 2021, as of this writing.
Not much is known yet about the plot of the 9th installment but with the return of Cipher, the film’s longtime villain played by Charlize Theron, chances are that a part of the plot could include the Fast and Furious family hunting her down.
There are also speculations that the 9th film could head to outer space! In addition to Charlize Theron, the cast would also see the return of Helen Mirren and Nathalie Emmanuel to reprise their roles as Shaw’s mother and Ramsey respectively. Franchise staples Jordana Brewster, Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, and Chris ‘Ludacris‘ Bridges will all feature in the 9th film, but there will be the absence of Dwayne Johnson.
During the filming of the 8th film, there was a fight between Johnson and Diesel and as a result, they didn’t get to film any set together, Diesel would later vow never to work with Johnson again, and as such, he (Johnson) would not be featuring in the 9th movie, but regardless, speculations are that Johnson would continue to feature in another series of the franchise. He already has a spin-off titled Hobbs & Shaw which was released in August 2019 starring Jason Statham.
Fast and Furious 9 would also see the feature of a couple of new faces, they include John Cena, Vinnie Bennett, Anna Sawai, and Finn Cole. Professional mixed martial artist and UFC heavyweight fighter Francis Ngannou would also feature in the film. He would be the third MMA fighter to join the franchise after Ronda Rousey who featured in the 7th film and Gina Carano who was the first following her appearance in the 6th film.
The crew of the film also sees the return of old faces including the director Justin Lin who directed the third, fourth, fifth and sixth Fast and Furious films. The screenwriting credit goes to Daniel Casey who is best known for writing the 2018 science fiction crime drama film, Kin.
In February 219 in London, the pre-production process of Fast and Furious 9 begun and by June 2019 filming had started. Diesel took to his Instagram account to make the big reveal with a video of himself on the film set. Filming was said to have been halted for a day in July following an onset accident involving a stuntman. The accident was serious and landed the stuntman in the ICU but fortunately, by August 2019, he had been discharged.
When Is the Release Date?
The release date of Fast and Furious 9 has undergone a couple of changes. It was first slated for release in April 2019 but was shifted to April 2020, exactly a year forward. However, in early 2019, Universal Pictures revealed that the movie’s release date had been pushed forward by a month and is slated for release on the 22nd of May 2020.
