Ngozi Fulani is an activist who is highly passionate about helping female victims of domestic and sexual violence. She founded Sistah Space, a charity organization for abused girls and women. Sistah Space is the first domestic abuse charity for African and Caribbean women and girls in the United Kingdom. The organization supports families affected by domestic abuse by removing any cultural and societal biases that might likely be encountered by the victims.
To ensure that their objectives are met, the organization provides various services for victims some of which include advocacy, a charity shop, and a food bank. It also conducts research and trains victims on how best to overcome their abuse experiences and become better versions of themselves.
Ngozi currently works as an Independent Domestic Violence Advisor (IDVA) and Independent Sexual Violence Advisor at Sistah Space, a role she assumed in November 2015.
Why Did Ngozi Fulani Gain Media Attention?
Although Ngozi Fulani is successful in her career as an Independent Sexual Violence Advisor (ISVA), she only gained media attention in November 2022 following her attendance at the domestic abuse charity event held by Princess Camilla at Buckingham Palace.
Speaking about the event during an interview, Ngozi revealed that Prince William’s godmother and the Queen’s Lady in Waiting; Lady Susan Hussey had put her under prolonged racism by repeatedly asking her where she was really from despite having told her that she was from Hackney.
Ngozi further stated that Lady Susan had raised her hair to see her name tag and asked her “What part of Africa are you from?” although Ngozi was born and raised in the United Kingdom. The encounter left Ngozi embarrassed as she had to stand before other guests while Lady Hussey questioned her heritage.
The encounter with Lady Susan at Buckingham palace reminded Ngozi of the racism she has had to deal with in the past. After her parents moved to the United Kingdom, Ngozi’s family was the only black family on their road and this made the children encounter challenges in relating with other children and adults alike.
Her brothers were constantly attacked by their peers and the police, and she was also not spared the bullying on account of her color. Thus, she decided to speak out against the “Prolonged Racism” she faced at the palace.
Following Ngozi’s revelations, many social media users exploded in anger over the allegations of racism and despite Ngozi’s claim that she did not want Lady Susan Hussey to lose her job, the Queen’s Lady in Waiting eventually resigned from her position following the media backlash.
How Did the Royal Family React to the Media Backlash?
Some days after Ngozi Fulani tweeted about the incident at Buckingham Palace, the Palace claimed that it had invited her to discuss the issue in person. However, she denied having received any invitation from the palace, although she later had a direct discussion with the palace on the issue.
Speaking on the incident, Prince William declared that racism of any sort had no place in society and further classified Lady Susan Hussey’s comments as unacceptable. Consequently, Lady Susan Hussey apologized for her comments and also resigned from her position as the Queen’s Lady in Waiting.
