With over six seasons as the chief stewardess on the reality TV series Below Deck, Kate Chastain has become a major fixture and a well sought after cast member. The show which debuted in 2013 on NBCUniversal’s pay network Bravo, focuses around the personal and professional lives of the cast members as they work on a mega-yacht during the yacht charter season. Kate has been on the show since its inception. As of October 2019, she joined the show for its seventh season.
In 2016, Kate Chastain compiled stories about her work and life experiences. Those stories were published in her book, Lucky Charming, which quickly became an Amazon #1 Best Seller in the Humor Category. She has amassed over 400k followers on Instagram and around 170k followers on Twitter. When on her offseason from the yachting life, Chastain resides in Melbourne, Florida.
Early Life and Career
Kate Chastain was born on January 2, 1983, in Sacramento, California, the United States of America. She was born to a former American rock star named Michael Monastery and his wife Jerri Hastey. Thanks to her birth, she is of American nationality and Caucasian origin. Growing up, Kate was raised in Sacramento City along with her four siblings. When she was very young, her parents separated and her mother remarried afterward to a man called Michael Hastey.
The Below Deck star started out working in the yacht industry as a laundry stewardess when she was 24. Over time, she fell in love with the work and was able to rise in ranks, getting promoted to the chief stewardess. From that point, her life took a positive turn. Thanks to her promotion, Kate Chastain landed the role of a chief stewardess on Bravo’s Below Deck. Other cast members on the show include Courtney Skippon, Tanner Sterback, Lee Rosbach, Simone Mashile, Ashton Pienaar, Brian de Saint Pern, Abbi Murphy, and Kevin Dobson.
In 2017, Kate Chastain began a new business venture that she tends to focus on during the offseason for yachting; her non-profit boutique. Genesis Boutique is a non-profit high-end resale shop that she owns and operates and all of the proceeds that she makes in the boutique go to support Genesis House. For those not familiar with the name, Genesis House works to help homeless women and children find transitional or temporary housing while they get back on their feet.
Is Kate Chastain in a Relationship?
Kate Chastain identifies as bisexual and, for the record, dated both men and women. Rocio Hernandez, however, was her first and only same-sex partner. Hernandez is a former professional soccer player from Madrid, Spain. She played soccer in her home in Spain before her family relocated to the United States. She is a former San Francisco Nighthawks team captain and from 2014 to 2015, served as the Director of Marketing and Advertising at NSFit. Rocio gained a degree in Communications and PR in 2008 from Florida Tech.
Kate Chastain was arrested in 2016 for assaulting Hernandez inside her home. Police officers arrived at the scene and charged Chastain with strangling her girlfriend, with the altercation caught on the arresting officers’ body cams. A trial was later set. Kate was eventually released on a $5000 bond and ended up being charged for a misdemeanor.
Before she started dating Hernandez, Kate Chastain was dating fellow Below Deck cast member, Ben Robinson. Ben is a master chef who has worked under Italian chefs, as well as did an apprenticeship at three-star Michelin Star restaurant The Fat Duck. In February 2017, he announced that he would not return to Bravo’s Below Deck after the fourth season. He appeared on seasons 1 through 4 of Below Deck, serving as a chef on the yacht. Kate has mentioned that after their breakup, Ben was the one who encouraged her to date Hernandez.
Kate Chastain and second steward Josiah Carter also dated briefly after meeting each other when the latter joined the show in season 6. The two worked harmoniously from the beginning, creating a friendship-chemistry that was enjoyable for viewers. Chastain never found herself having to ask Carter to re-do tasks and Carter anticipated the guests’ every need. Beyond their working relationship, the pair also seemed to be very interested in each other. They shared a room and often partied together when the crew was off charter. Josiah’s love for boats, traveling, and being a professionally trained butler made him an ideal candidate to become a steward on Below Deck. However, he is not slated to return for the seventh season and it seems his relationship with Kate Chastain is no more.
