Wendy Crewson is one of Canada’s leading women in the entertainment industry. Over the years, she has been active both in the small and big screen and has appeared alongside Hollywood’s top acts. She played alongside Harrison Ford as the US First lady in 1997’s Air Force One. Another of her early successes came as the role of Tim Allen’s ex-wife in three The Santa Clause movies.

Wendy Jane Crewson was born on the 9th day of May in 1956, in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada and was raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. She is the daughter of Robert Binnie Crewson and June Doreen (née Thomas). She has a brother named Brad Crewson and together, the two chose to attend John Rennie High School in Pointe Claire, Québec.

Crewson had fallen in love with acting as a kid and had her first acting experience during her 10th grade when she performed in The Boy Friend. Following high school graduation, Crewson chose to attend Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. Her female cousin had graduated from the school in 1924, a time when women were not really going to the university. Crewson said she was inspired by her cousin’s boldness and decided to choose the school.

At Queens, this actress excelled greatly. She acted in several school productions and earned the Lorne Greene Award for outstanding work in the theatre. She graduated in 1977 and subsequently, relocated to London where she attended the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art.

By the early 1980s, Wendy Crewson became a frequent face in Canadian television, acting in numerous TV films. She got her first break playing the lead role in the 1991 film, The Doctor. Crewson quickly built up her resume appearing in a number of top Hollywood films while maintaining a fair level of visibility on the small screen.

Her other well-known films would include; To Gillian on Her 37th Birthday (1996), Bicentennial Man (1999) alongside Robin Williams, as well as The 6th Day (2000) opposite Arnold Schwarzenegger.

However, in the past, she was married for over two decades to American film, TV, and stage actor, Michael Murphy. They became a couple in 1988 and stayed married for exactly 21 years before divorcing in 2009.

Their marriage was blessed with two children; daughter, Maggie Murphy born in 1989 and a son named Jack Murphy who was born in 1992. Both of their children acted with them in the 1998 film, Sleeping Dogs Lie. Though the reason for their divorce didn’t make it to media light, it was clearly an amicable one as the ex-couple have remained friends and even continue to work together. They worked together on the 2014 Canadian film, Fall.

In December 2014, Wendy Crewson revealed to the media during an appearance on a talk show that she came out as gay to her family a few years earlier. Upon her revelation, many were quick to speculate that maybe it was part of what caused her divorce from Murphy. Crewson said the scariest part of coming out was the fear of rejection from her kids. To her surprise, they both accepted her, though it was not necessarily easy.

Michael Murphy who was born on the 5th of May, 1938 is known for playing authoritative and morally ambiguous characters. He is also a frequent collaborator with the legendary filmmaker, Robert Altman. Some of his best-known roles include; Martin, the adulterous husband of Jill Clayburgh in An Unmarried Woman (1978), and enigmatic lawyer Alan Kligman in Magnolia (1999). Perhaps, his best known small screen role is his titular role in Tanner ’88.
