He was the first of 3 sons of an American mother Grace Gamble (née Atkinson) and a Danish father Viggo Peter Mortensen Sr. Growing up, his family moved around a number of European and South American countries particularly Argentina and consequently, he attained a level of fluency in the Spanish language.
His parents got divorced when he was 11 years of age and as a result, himself, his mother and younger brothers all returned to New York.
