Victor Ortiz Biography

Victor Ortiz was born to Mexican immigrant parents on the 31st of January 1987 in Garden City, Kansas. At a very young age, Ortiz took up boxing which he hoped to use as a way out of poverty. He trained at the Salvation Army Red Shield Community Center where he caught the attention of former heavyweight boxer Ron Lyle.

Under Lyle’s mentorship, Ortiz was able to learn valuable lessons that helped him win an AAU national junior Olympics tournament in 2002 with a perfect 5-0 record. He then went on to link up with former IBF Super Featherweight Champion Roberto Garcia who became his legal guardian as the teenager moved to live with him in Oxnard, California. Ortiz completed his high school education at Pacifica High School as he trained at the La Colonia Youth Boxing Club.

In 2003, Victor Ortiz competed at Police Athletic League national championships which he won. He tried out for the United States Olympic boxing team but was unable to make the cut. The following year, however, he decided to turn professional at just eighteen years of age. He recorded victories in his first seven fights before falling short through disqualification to Corey Alarcon after having knocked him down once.

Despite that loss, Ortiz was able to build a total record of 24 wins and 1 draw as he earned the 2008 Boxing Prospect of the Year honor from ESPN. In June 2009, however, he suffered the second loss of his career fighting for the Interim WBA Light Welterweight title against the undefeated Marcos Rene Maidana. After that bout, Ortiz put together an eight-game undefeated streak before coming up against Floyd Mayweather Jr. in September 2011. He has since that time lost three more fights, winning three and drawing one.

His Family

Victor Ortiz had a very tough childhood. His parents, who as mentioned above were Mexican immigrants, and it was hard for them to provide for their family. The situation later grew worse after Ortiz’s mother abandoned him, his three siblings, and father when he was just seven years of age. This left them at the mercy of their father who found refuge in not just abusing alcohol, but his children also.

After about five years from the time his mother left, Ortiz’s father followed suit, leaving his young children to fend for themselves. They reportedly worked in cornfields to make enough money to eat before they later entered foster care. Ortiz and his siblings spent about four years in foster care until their older sister, Carmen, legally became an adult and was able to adopt her siblings.

Wife or Girlfriend, Is He Married?

We can not confirm if Victor Ortiz is married, however, he does have a partner who he has been with for a long time, hence the confusion. The boxer has been in a longterm relationship with Deborah Mather who he shares a child with. The couple welcomed their son, Royal Ortiz, sometime in January 2017.

Nothing is known about Deborah Mather and it is also not clear when exactly the pair began seeing each other given that Ortiz was previously linked to someone else. Ortiz was once said to be dating the professional dancer, Lindsay Arnold, who danced alongside him on the reality television show Dancing with the Stars in 2013. The rumors, however, died down after Arnold got married to someone else in 2015.

Victor Ortiz’s Net Worth

Victor Ortiz has come a long way from the time he spent working on a cornfield to make ends meet. The former WBC Welterweight titleholder is today said to have a net worth of around $7 million. He was able to amass most of his wealth through his numerous fights as well as through the few movie roles he has been able to bag. It is not clear how much Ortiz makes per fight or per movie, however, in the 2011 fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr., he pocketed $2.5 million.
