Tom Llamas Biography (Nationality, Career)

Thomas Edward Llamas (pronounced Yahmiss) was born on July 2, 1979, in Miami, Florida to immigrants who fled Cuba in the 1960s. His nationality is American. Llamas graduated from the Loyola University in New Orleans, Louisiana with degrees in both Broadcast Journalism and Drama and Speech. In college, Tom was a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon.

Years later, Tom enrolled at the University of Miami’s Institute for Cuban and Cuban-American Studies where he completed a program that focused on Raul Castro and Cuban-American voters.

Fresh out of college, Tom began his journalism career at NBC News Specials Unit in New York. In a short while, he joined MSNBC where he covered mostly politics in addition to the war with Afghanistan and the 9/11 attacks.

During the 2000 presidential elections, Tom traveled to not less than 40 states in the nation, covering the campaigns of the likes of Rev. Al Sharpton, Sen. John Kerry, and Sen. John Edwards. He focused mostly on the Democratic candidates.

Tom’s stint with MSNBC came to an end in 2005 when he joined NBC’s Miami-based WTVJ aka NBC 6. For the next four years, Tom went on to stage an incredible career, sweeping accolades as he progressed. In 2008, he earned an Emmy Award for his story on the smuggling of Cuban refugees into America through boats called “Go-Fast.” During his work on that story, Tom became the first TV journalist ever to be embedded with the Coast Guard.

Also in 2008, Tom covered Pope Benedict XVI’s trip to the nation’s capital. During his stint at NBC 6, Tom covered a total of 8 Hurricanes including the Hurricane Katrina which he covered from Biloxi.

And then came 2009 and Tom returned to New York, this time to work for NBC News as a correspondent and WNBC-NBC 4 as an assignment/investigative reporter. During his 5 years with WNBC, Tom in 2013 won an Emmy for his coverage of Hurricane Irene. That same year he also bagged Emmy awards for Best Anchor and Best Hard News Story. In 2014, he won two regional Edward R. Murrow awards including one as part of the WNBC team that covered the Hurricane Sandy.

With WNBC, Tom also covered the Earthquake in Haiti, Boston Marathon bombings, and the Times Square Bomb Scare.

Tom was employed by Walt Disney’s ABC News in 2014. He is the anchor of the weekend edition of “World News Tonight” in addition to being the Chief National Correspondent for all ABC news programs and platforms. He covered Republican candidates during the 2016 Presidential elections during which Donald Trump called him a sleaze.

Nope! Tom Llamas is not a gay man. He is married with children. His wife is Jennifer Llamas and they have been married since 2006.

It is unknown to the public when or where they met but from our research, it is most likely to be at the Loyola University New Orleans where they both schooled or at MSNBC where they both started their journalism careers. Jennifer graduated in 2003 with a BA in broadcast journalism.
