Multiple Golden Globe Award-winning couple who has been ranked among the highest-earning celebrities sums up the pair, Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman. Tom is notable for starring in quite a number of blockbuster films since he ventured into acting in the 80s. Top Gun, The Color of Money, Born on the Fourth of July, A Few Good Men, Jerry Maguire, Magnolia, Edge of Tomorrow and popular Mission: Impossible film series are some of the popular films that he has featured in. His former wife, Nicole Kidman is also an award-winning actress and veteran in Hollywood. She is a recipient of five Golden Globe Awards, two Primetime Emmy Awards, and one Academy Award. Just like Cruise, she was named in 2006 as one of the highest-earning actresses as at that time. The popular news tabloid, Time, listed her as one of the 100 most influential people in the world sometime in 2018.
However, on the relationship front, Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman did not achieve the happily ever after kind of life they desired. They started off very well and what seemed like a match made in heaven was formed. Read on as we bare in the following paragraphs the events that led to the two celebrities ending up as a married couple and the real reason they decided to call it quits.
How Did Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman Meet?
Tom Cruise is notorious for having several relationships even before meeting Nicole. In the 80s, he was involved with the likes of Rebecca De Mornay and Cherilyn Sarkisian who are popularly known as Cher and Patti Scialfa. All of the women mentioned were by far older than him but as it then, their age was not a barrier for the young actor. It is also interesting to know that Tom was married once before he met Kidman. This marriage was to the American actress Mimi Rogers in 1987 but the duo divorced in just a space of 2 years and some months.
Kidman is also not a novice when it comes to relationships as she has been involved with other men before meeting Tom Cruise. Tom Burlinson, Marcus Graham and Adrien Brody were some of the men she has had relationships with. However, her meeting with Tom is nothing compared to the others as it has been described as love at first sight kind of encounter. This was on the production set of Days of Thunder and just a few months afterward, they got married that was towards the end of 1990. Their wedding was in Telluride Colorado and although they did not have biological children, they still became parents to their adopted daughter and son, namely Isabelle Jane and Connor Antony.
The Real Reason Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman Divorced
The award-winning actor filed for divorce in February 2001 two days after he and Nicole released a joint statement announcing their separation. The union between the two was annulled following a ruling by the court in August 2001. Tom in response to questions asked about the cause of the divorce cited irreconcilable differences. A typical family court sees ‘Irreconcilable differences’ as grounds enough to dissolve any marriage.
However, during that early stage, Kidman granted an interview and made it known that she did not see the divorce coming at all. She went on the say she still loved Tom but cited that their age could have been the cause of the problems they were facing in their marriage. Being young and coupled with their rising fame took a toll on their home and it turned out they could not handle it well.
It has also been alleged that it was Tom’s belief in Scientology that was the primary cause of the split. Reports have suggested that Tom Cruise actually introduced Nicole Kidman to the Church of Scientology and the religion but she did not oblige him.
Kidman and Cruise have moved on ever since their divorce in 2001 and they rarely communicate with each other anymore. In fact, both of them remarried, Nicole married Keith Urban and Tom married Katie Holmes whom he later divorced. The union between Nicole and Keith which started in 2006 has produced two daughters – Sunday and Faith.
