At the top of the rap music industry, there are very few big names that dominate so much that one hardly gets to hear some of the young ones that are still coming up from below. One of such who is making his way to the mainstream is a rapper you have probably never heard of, Token.
Although he has been rapping since the age of 13 back in 2012, he began as a professional rapper much later and has been growing somewhat popular since 2015 following the release of his single “No Sucka Mcs Contest”.
Token (Rapper) – Bio and Age
In the rap community and among fans, he is known as Token but the rapper was born Ben Goldberg on September 24, 1998, in Boston. It was also there that he was brought up with his sister by their parents whose marriage later ended when Token was in fourth grade.
While growing up, the young Goldberg had a serious anger problem and he would explode at the slightest provocation. In fact, as a first grader, he got himself suspended from school after he fought and yelled at a teacher. It is this anger that drew him to hip-hop which then offered a type of therapeutic healing to him.
By the time he was in his sixth grade, Token and his friends were already recording songs on his Mac and selling them around. Together with Colin Mitchell, they collaborated on some songs that later got heard by Glasshouse Productions’ Jon Glass who continued to help them with their music while also keeping track of their academic performance.
In 2013, when he was only 13, Token rapped for the first time in public. On that day, Hopsin had finished performing and when he was signing autographs, the young kid stepped forward without planning it. Without any fear of embarrassing himself before the more experienced rapper whom he sees as an idol and the many kids around, he cleverly dropped his lines.
After he was through, he got some encouragement as well as advice from the older hip hop star. For Token, even though that was not a stage performance before a very large crowd, it became a night of his life.
He continued with what he knew to do best and then in 2015, he got his considerably big break with his video for No Sucka Mcs Contest.
The video helped him to meet actor Mark Wahlberg who contacted him and the two became friends. The actor gave him his first acting opportunity in Patriots Day (2016).
Next, Token started getting calls from labels as well as for touring opportunities. Thus far, he has more than 30 songs to his name that are doing good including “Doozy” which has over 8 million views on YouTube and “Patty Cake” which has more than 5 million views so far on YouTube.
Token still has a rather fresh career as a rapper. Still, he has a fair net worth that is estimated at $300, 000. With his continuous success, it is expected that he may even go higher as far as his fortune is concerned.
Height and Weight
Neither the tallest nor shortest man around, Token stands at a height of 5 feet 7 inches tall. As stated, he had a problem with his weight when he was growing up, going as high as 140 pounds. However, he has shed a lot of that although his present weight is not known.
1. His parents and siblings
Although the name of the rapper’s father is not known, his mother’s name is Leslie Goldberg. He also has an older sister, Madeline who is five years older than him.
2. His father suffers from diabetes
Token’s father suffers from diabetes. After the divorce of his parents, Ben was up by 140 pounds in body weight. When he went to see his doctor, he was told that it was very surprising that his added weight had not caused him to be diabetic. This got him scared such that he decided to start working out. He put a lot of discipline into it that in no time, he had already seen the result when he was 50 pounds lighter. This is the same discipline that he would later decide to put into his music.
3. He struggled with explosive anger
As a young child, Ben would have an episode that would result in him screaming and throwing things. Immediately after doing that, he would get solemn and retreat to his room. The often asked himself what was wrong with him after such episodes.
To fix the issue, he tried different therapists before he was later found to have depression and anxiety. More so, he was also found to be slow in reading and with language disability.
