The Weeknd Wiki, Bio, Age, Family
It was on February 16, 1990, that The Weeknd was born in Ontario, Canada to Ethiopian parents who migrated to the country. His birth name is Abel Makkonen Tesfaye. Even before he grew up, Abel’s father left him and his young mother who had to work very hard to provide for the young boy that would grow up to entertain the world.
After his father had left and later began another family somewhere else, the greater responsibility of taking care of young Abel fell on his grandmother since his mother who was now left with the task of caring for the family had to do multiple jobs.
For his education, the Canadian singer attended the Samuel Hearne Middle School and from there, he went on to begin his high school education at West Hill Collegiate Institute. Next, he moved to Birchmount Park Collegiate Institute but he didn’t finish pursuing his high school certificate before he decided to call it quits when he was 17 to give music all he got.
While growing up, he was always listening to a broad variety of music, which will in later years come to influence his style of singing. More so, his life wasn’t without hitches as he came in contact with drugs when he was rather very young before getting things straight.
Looking at the beginning of his career which as stated was influenced by what he listened to while growing up, The Weeknd experimented by fusing together rap, R&B, soul, and everything he could pull together in songs.
His first attempt at selling himself to the world was in 2010 when he made a song, What You Need and posted it on YouTube. Although it wasn’t massively accepted at first, the song was later loved greatly after it was reposted in 2011.
Soon, the singer released his first free download, House of Balloons, as well as two mixtapes. At this point, his talent was unquestionable and it opened ways for him to feature in fellow Canadian, Drake’s, album of 2011, Take Care.
Since he got the opportunity of being featured in Drake’s work, The Weeknd took it upon himself to reach a height many could only imagine. This is most especially as the album had some songs from the singer’s House of Balloons album. That gave him enough publicity for Universal’s Republic Records to sign him. 2012 saw him releasing his earlier work, Trilogy, but this time, there was already a good ground for him and it went platinum. His next work, Kiss Land, came out in 2003. Through this all, the singer still remained hidden from the public as a result of his shyness and insecurities.
From then on, he has become a huge sensation both as a solo artist and when he works with others. Many of his songs such as Can’t Feel My Face and The Hills became popular with fans in his 2015, Beauty Behind the Madness Album. His next released album was Starboy. This album was another huge success and it earned the Earned it singer a Grammy nomination.
For his entire hard work, The Weeknd has various recognitions to show, most especially two Grammy awards for Best Urban Contemporary Album for Beauty Behind the Madness and Best R&B Performance for “Earned It (Fifty Shades of Grey)”. Overall, Abel has close to 80 awards and more than a hundred nominations that include the Academy Awards, American Music Awards, Billboard Music Awards, BET Awards and a lot more.
