He returned to the United States after the 2016-17 season and was selected by the Oklahoma City Thunder in the first round of the 2017 NBA Draft.

Who is Terrance Ferguson?

Terrance Eugene Ferguson was born on May 17, 1998, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. At a young age, his family moved to Dallas, Texas where he schooled at Prime Prep Academy. He was an early bloomer as his winning ways started right from his first year on the Prime Prep basketball team. He averaged 10 points per game in his freshman (2012-13) season helping his school clinch the 2013 NACA Division I Tournament title with a 38–2 record. His impressive performance earned him NACA All-Tournament Team designation as well as the NACA Tournament MVP honors.

Despite having started on a high note, Ferguson’s high school career was thwarted in January 2015 when his school Prime Prep was shut down due to alleged misappropriation of funds. The talented youngster, a few of his classmates and their team coach moved to Advanced Preparatory International, a new institution established in place of their former school. There, he had his senior season (2015-16) during which he averaged 17.0 points, 3.5 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game. He featured in the 2016 editions of the McDonald’s All-American Game and the Nike Hoop Summit earning MVP honors in the latter. He was also the slam dunk champion of the 2016 Ballislife All-American Game.

Terrance Ferguson was the toast of several college recruiters by the time he got out of high school. He received numerous college basketball offers starting from his junior season. He made a verbal commitment to the University of Alabama as early as August 2015, however, he never got to sign a letter of intent with the school. He eventually de-committed from Alabama in March 2016 and a month later, he switched his allegiance to the University of Arizona. His commitment to Arizona only lasted till June 2016 when it was first reported that the talented player was going to skip college entirely. It was eventually confirmed by the end of the month that Ferguson had dropped the possibility of a college career for a chance to start off his professional career at an overseas club.

Ferguson returned to the United States at the end of the season to get ready for the 2017 NBA Draft. He was eventually selected in the first round by the Oklahoma City Thunder as the 21st overall pick of the draft. He got signed to a rookie contract in July 2017. He was at some point assigned to the Oklahoma City Blue, the G-league affiliate of the Oklahoma City Thunder, however, the decision was quickly rescinded.
