Biography

Stone Phillips was born as Stone Stockton Phillips in Texas, in the United States on December 2, 1954. His father Victor Phillips is a chemical engineer while his mother Grace Phillips worked as a school teacher. He is of Scottish ethnic origin and holds American nationality.

While he was growing up, Phillips attended Parkway West High School located in Ballwin, Missouri and he emerged as an above average student. After his graduation, he enrolled at Yale University where he studied Philosophy. He played football during his high school days and was the starting quarterback for his school football team. Philips was also a part of the Yale University team called Yale Bulldogs squad that became champions in the Ivy League Football Competition held in 1976. He obtained his bachelor’s degree in 1977 and was also honored with F. Gordon Brown Award for outstanding academic and athletic leadership.

Professional Career

After his graduation, Philips relocated to Atlanta, Georgia where he kicked off his career. First, he worked as a remedial reading and mathematics teacher at a Juvenile Detention Centre in Fulton County. Later on, he started working as a correspondent for a local NBC affiliate named WXIA-TV and after two years of working with them, Phillips was hired by ABC News as an assignment editor for their news bureau in Washington D.C. He gradually climbed the ladder of journalism and has covered stories in different parts of the world including the Lebanese war as well as the exodus of Vietnamese boat people.

Subsequently, he was given a regular role as a contributor to the ABC News magazine 20/20, he also appeared on shows like Good Morning America and World News Sunday.

However, he left ABC in 1992, bringing his 12-year-old stint to an end.
