Marbury was born to a large family of seven children and he was the sixth of them. Born in Coney Island, the NBA star attended Abraham Lincoln High School. Born in the 1970s, specifically February 20, 1977, Stephon was considered the next big star out of New York during his formative years. During his senior year, he was awarded the New York State Mr. Basketball.
Under the watchful eye of many colleges who desired his talents, Stephon Marbury was one of the most exciting talents in the country. Alongside Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, and Antawn Jamison, he was a named 1995 McDonald’s All-American. Out of the many few schools who showed interest in the Brooklyn born point guard, he picked Georgia Tech due to its coach’s heavy pursuit of him.
His college career started off brightly and led the team to an NCAA tournament semifinal in its first season with the Yellow Jackets. After playing a season with the Yellow Jackets, however, Stephon decided to declare for the NBA Draft.
As a well-sought talent who had just finished another fantastic season, Stephon was no doubt a first round pick prospect for the draft and it was rightly confirmed as he was picked in the first round by the Milwaukee Bucks as the fourth overall pick. He never played for the Bucks however as he was immediately traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves. His rookie season in the NBA saw him named in the All-Rookie Team after a season where he posted 15.8 points and 7.8 assists. His first two seasons at the Timberwolves, he was a prominent leader in the team, taking them to two playoffs in 1997 and 1998.
He didn’t last long at the Timberwolves and was eventually traded to the New Jersey Nets. He spent two seasons at the Nets and despite continuing his own individual brilliance, he had limited quality talent around him and the Nets never made the playoffs during his time in the team. After a brief sojourn at the Nets, he was traded to the Phoenix Suns and with a much better cast of players, he led the team to the playoffs and finished the season with his second All-Star team award.
Stephon got his reputation as a bad boy after a public feud with New York Knicks head coach in the 2005/2006 season. After getting traded to the New York Knicks in 2004, he fell out with the head coach, Larry Brown. It was the first of a series of feuds and public spats before he was banned from the team.
Before he headed over to China for the remainder of his career, he played for the Boston Celtics for a year before moving to China to play in the Chinese Basketball Association. His Chinese romance last 8 years and he played for 4 teams during his time in the country.
His CBA career started with the Shanxi Zhongyu Brave Dragons. His first season in the CBA, he featured in the All-Star game and won the MVP award but he moved to Foshan Dralions after a year at Shanxi. Due to Foshan’s inability to make the playoffs, Stephon later moved to Beijing Ducks where he played from 2011 to 2017. He won three Chinese Championships during his time at the club. His last club in the Chinese League was Beijing Fly Dragons. He played for then from 2017-2018 after which he announced his retirement from basketball.
