Lang was born on July 11, 1952, in New York City into a very rich family as the youngest among 3 children. His father, Eugene Lang was an entrepreneur and philanthropist who founded REFAC Technology Development Corporation. His mother, Theresa Volmer is of German and Irish descent.
For his education, Lang who would go on to be described as the actor’s actor had his elementary education in Jamaica Estates, Queens before proceeding to George Ryan Junior High School for his middle school education. From here, Stephen Lang went to George School, and then Swarthmore College for his high school and college education respectively.
By the time he graduated from Swarthmore with a degree in Literature, he was ready for the theatres in the professional sense of it. He began his career on stage before later transitioning to the screen, even though that didn’t mean that he left the stage completely. He is known for his roles in many movies and productions including Twice in a Lifetime (1985), Band of the Hand (1986), Tombstone (1993), Public Enemies (2009), and Beyond Valkyrie: Dawn of the 4th Reich (2016). His most recent productions are in Braven and Mortal engines both in 2018, as well as the TV show, Into the Badlands.
Having had a career that can be said to be very long with over 80 productions to his name including in movies, Television Shows, and the theatre, he has rightly earned a good spot for himself and has got a good number of nominations and awards including the Saturn Award which he won in the category of Best Supporting Actor for his role in Avatar (2009), as well as a Grace Award for his role in Gods and Generals (2003). He has also won many awards in the theatre.
Apart from the accolades, Stephen Lang has also been recognized for his contributions to the theatre which has led the Swarthmore College to award him an Honorary Degree. More so, the Jacksonville University has also awarded him with an Honorary Doctorate in Humane Letters.
