Sweden is known for many things – inventing the zipper, Celsius, propeller, and Spotify. Another contribution of the Scandinavian country to the world is Stellan Skarsgård. The Swedish actor has been at the forefront of some of the best movies in modern history and his children are all set to continue that legacy.
Stellan Skarsgård Bio
Stellan Skarsgård was born to Swedish parents, Gudrun and Jan Skarsgård on June 13th, 1951. He spent his childhood moving from place to place in what is perhaps a result of his parents’ employment responsibilities.
Stellan was raised an atheist and is a known critic of religion and its effects, especially in Sweden. He is a humanist.
Between his nomadic childhood and Stellan taking an interest in acting early in his life, so much that he was already a star in Sweden by the time he was 21, he has no considerable formal educational background available in the public space at the moment.
As mentioned earlier, by the time Stellan was 21, he had accumulated considerable experience across film, TV and stage productions. His work in the Swedish film industry included Good Evening, Mr. Wallenberg which is one of his famous Swedish projects. His television appearances include Bombi Bitt.
After gaining prominence in Sweden, Stellan set his eyes on the World’s number one film industry, Hollywood. The thespian got his first Hollywood role in 1985, playing an immigrant who is mentally disturbed and being chased by a bounty hunter. In one of his more prominent Hollywood roles, Skarsgård played Captain Tupolev in The Hunt for Red October.
Certainly, there is no denying that Stellan Skarsgård has featured in his own fair share of iconic films but the actor’s filmography narrowly missed a chance to feature Schindler’s List, one of the greatest movies in modern history. He was strongly considered for the role of Oskar Schindler but it was ultimately passed on to Liam Neeson. Skarsgård later got a slight revenge by replacing Neeson in the 2004 film, Exorcist: The Beginning.
His other iconic roles include playing Bootstrap Bill Turner in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End. He wrote his name permanently in modern film history by taking on the role of Dr. Erik Selvig in the Marvel Cinematic Universe films. He appeared in four movies, Thor, the sequel, Thor: The Dark World, The Avengers, and Avengers: Age of Ultron. Other prominent roles in Skarsgård filmography include playing Bill Anderson in Mamma Mia and the sequel, Mamma Mia: Here we go again, Prof Gerald Lambeau in Good Will Hunting.
His work features a lot of films directed by Lars Von Trier, including Breaking the Waves, which is another one of the actor’s more critically acclaimed performances. Perhaps a matter of familiarity in culture and language, Skarsgård has a lot of preference for Scandinavian directors. Other than Lars Von Trier, he has a strong and close working relationship with Hans Petter Moland, a Norwegian. Stellan describes his relationship with Moland as that of a couple. Both filmmakers are believed to be very close friends. Skarsgård has appeared in four movies directed by the Norwegian director, such as Aberdeen and Zero Kelvin.
His Net Worth
Through a career that cuts across film, television, and stage, Stellan has built a net worth of $40 million. His net worth has been built over decades of appearing in commercially successful films such as Marvel films and the Pirates of the Caribbean film franchise. His performances in other dramatic roles like Good Will Hunting has made him a high-profile actor, commanding a high salary for an appearance in films.
Family Life: Wife, Children
Stellan has been married twice. His first marriage was to My Skarsgård, a doctor, with whom he had six children. The couple got married in April 1975 and were together until May 2007 when they got divorced. Four of their six children, Alexander, Gustaf, Bill, and Valter have followed in their father’s footsteps in pursuit of an acting career. Their only daughter, Eija, is a former model.
Stellan remarried two years after his divorce in January 2009 to Megan Everett and shares two children with his second wife. The couple has two sons, Ossain and Kolbjörn.
After his 8th child, Skarsgård got a vasectomy, declaring that he was more than fine with eight children.
