His biological parents are Vernall Varnado and Beverly Tate. Among other things, his biological father was a Vietnam War veteran, a mail carrier, and a singer. Reports have it that Vernall left his family when the rapper was only three months old. His mother soon got married to Calvin Cordozar Broadus Sr. whom the rapper was named after.

The rapper had a rough upbringing. As a child, he delivered newspapers and bagged groceries among other things to support his family. He had several run-ins with the law that landed him behind bars several times. He decided to focus on pursuing a career in music in the early 1990s. Together with Warren G and Nate Dogg, he formed a hip-hop trio called 213. It is said that Snoop began singing and playing the piano at a very young age and subsequently began rapping when he was in sixth grade.

At the age of 22 in 1993, he released his first solo album, Doggystyle. It sold over 11 million copies across the world, seven million in the United States. It remains his highest-selling album to date. His second album was Tha Doggfather (1996) and then Da Game Is to Be Sold, Not to Be Told (1998), No Limit Top Dogg (1999), and so on.
