Sir Ian McKellen is an iconic English actor who is perhaps best known for his roles in The Lord Of The Rings trilogy and The Hobbit trilogy. Sir Ian McKellen was born on the 25th of May, 1939 to Margery and Dennis McKellen in Burnley, Lancashire. The family relocated to Wigan, shortly before the second world war, where they lived until he was twelve. Then, in 1951, the family moved again but this time to Bolton. He has often said that growing up during the war had a long-lasting effect on him.
The actor is of Scottish and Irish descent. His father, both of his grandfathers and his great-great-grandfather were all preachers.
His mother died of breast cancer when he was only twelve years old and his father died twelve years later when he was twenty-four. Sir Ian later came out as gay to his stepmother, Gladys.
