Shawn Michaels is one of the most notable stars of the WWE who had a style that held wrestling fans the world over in awe of his capabilities and strength until he retired ceremoniously in 2010. His achievements during his active years as a wrestler are many and he has a whole lot of accolades and awards to show for it. It is safe to say that when it comes to wrestling, Shawn is royalty, he made wrestling in the 1990s and the 2000s something to look forward to and as such, he garnered fans and faithful followers who would give anything to support him during his matches.
Through his career which spanned decades, he was an actor, a professional wrestler and a media personality. Although he is retired now, he still holds sway over some things in the WWE, moreover, upon his retirement from professional wrestling in 2010, he was signed to WWE as an ambassador and trainer to help nurture up-coming talents and ensure a smooth transition of the old talents WWE fans loved so much to the younger generation.
He was born Michael Shawn Hickenbottom on July 22, 1965, in Chandler, Arizona as the last of the four children of his parents Richard and Carol Hickenbottom. His other, all older siblings include Randy, Scott, and Shari. He had a peculiar upbringing that one would say influenced his choice of profession. He grew up with a military father and as such, discipline was a rule heavily enforced to keep the children in line at all time. His father’s job also ensured that he grew up in different places at different times. Of the places the family lived, he spent some time in Reading, Berkshire, England, but also did some growing up in San Antonio, Texas. He attended Randolph High School on Randolph Air Force Base after which he proceeded to Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas but did not have the patience to study, so he dropped out and went for what he really wanted to do.
Shawn Michaels’ strict upbringing did one good thing for him, it gave him a mind of his own from an early stage so that at the age of 12, he already knew what he wanted to do with himself. He began by performing wrestling routines in his high school’s talent show, he went as far as using fake blood to make it look real and good too. He had previously been involved in the school’s football team right from when he was 6 and became the captain of the team before he graduated.
Professional Wrestling Career
From when he was little, Shawn never liked the name Michael, so everyone just called him Shawn instead, but after he dropped out of college to fully pursue his wrestling career, he decided to adopt Shawn Michaels as his ring name. After he left school, he began training under Mexican professional wrestler Jose Lothario in preparation for his debut on the 16th of October 1984 at the National Wrestling Alliance’s (NWA) Mid-South Wrestling territory. He lost the match, but spectators and professionals alike were impressed with his first attempt and so, more opportunities came calling.
By January the next year, he made his first appearance for World Class Championship Wrestling (WCCW), the NWA territory in Dallas, Texas. He made many appearances on many territories of the NWA, winning some and losing others as well as fighting alone and in a team until he made his national debut in the American Wrestling Association when he was just 20 years old.
With the world as his stage, Shawn Michaels went ahead to win hearts in the ring and do exploits that have become a trademark his fans cannot forget. Of the many things he did other than just wrestling, Shawn had headlined major pay-per-view WWE events between 1989 and 2010, he has closed Wrestlemania 5 times, he is a co-founder and the original leader of D-Generation X tag team which he formed with the likes of Hunter Hearst Helmsley (Triple H), Chyna and Rick Rude in 1997. Prior to that, he had worked in conjunction with Marty Jannetty in 1985 to launch the tag team The Midnight Rockers with Marty Jannetty.
To prove his worth, Shawn Michaels threw out a challenge for the WWF Championship and went ahead to win his first Intercontinental Championship, which announced him as one of the industry’s premier singles stars and he certainly did not waste that opportunity. He was famous for feuds such as the ones he had with Triple H between 2002 and 2004, with Chris Jericho in 2013, with Angle and Hogan in 2015, with McMahon in 2005, with Randy Orton and so many others.
From 1984 when Shawn Michaels debuted as a new wrestling talent, to 2010 when he officially hung his gloves to make way for newer talents, he blazed the trail all through and has been termed one of the greatest all-around wrestlers of all time. You just have to see his charisma in the ring and you won’t doubt this at all. Officially, however, here are his major wins.

Shawn Michaels’ Wife and Kids
In his very first attempt at matrimony, Shawn Michael got married to Theresa Lynn Wood in 1988 but the union was not to last as they soon ended up in an amicable divorce in 1994. There are still no clear reasons as to why the marriage fell apart. After the divorce, he met Rebecca Curci who was a former WCW Nitro Girl better known to many as Whisper. The two were introduced by a common friend named Rich Minzer. The two dated for a while until Shawn felt he was ready to give matrimony a second try.
Shawn officially married Curci on March 31, 1999, at the Graceland Wedding Chapel in Las Vegas. The union was quite fruitful as it produced two children; a son born on January 15, 2000, who they named Cameron Cade, and a daughter, Cheyenne born on August 19, 2004.
