Before the role became one every handsome action actor wanted to play, Sean Connery led the first film in the decades-long franchise. It is one of the many highlights in the 49 years career of the Scottish actor.

When he announced his retirement in 2003, it was the end of a career that had seen and achieved everything. The end of a path that started 24 years after his birth in Fountainbridge in Scotland on the 25th of August, 1930. He was born to an ordinary family; one where his father, Joseph Connery worked as a lorry driver and factory worker while his mother, Euphemia McBain worked as a cleaning woman. He was raised by his parents along with a younger sibling, his brother, Neil Connery.

Sean Connery, who was born Thomas Sean Connery showed signs of his exceptionalism when he had a rapid growth spurt that caused him to reach his full adult height at the age of 18. Over the course of his life, Sean was a sex symbol to millions of women, and men all over the globe, an effect that manifested as early as the age of 14 when he lost his virginity to an adult woman.

He got his first job as a milkman and later joined the Royal Navy, where he spent a short time before he discharged on health grounds. He returned to his life as a civilian, working other jobs as a lorry driver, lifeguard, coffin polisher, and as an artist’s model. Of all the jobs Sean Connery had before he became an actor, it was his work as a semi-professional footballer that was very close to redefining his life. His time as a worker in the theater introduced him to the world of acting as art and he took great interest in it. When an opportunity for an audition opened up, Sean auditioned for a role in a theater production of South Pacific. He got a small part in the play and it began a journey to the summit of the acting profession.

He appeared in a few stage plays before he got his first film role in Lilacs in the Spring. Ever since, the legendary appeared in over 50 films, including the iconic James Bond films, which he starred in seven times. He starred in his first James Bond film, as the first actor to portray the character in a film in Dr. No which was released in 1962. All seven films were commercially successful and elevated Sean Connery to a cult hero among film fans all over the globe. His performances and success of the films got him selected by the American Film Institute as the third-greatest hero in cinema history.

Although his career was pretty much defined by his Bond character, he starred in other iconic films, such as The Untouchables, which earned him his Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. He announced his official retirement from acting in 2007 although he stopped making films in 2003.

Sean Connery has been married twice so far. He married his first wife, Diane Cilento in 1962, however, the marriage did not last and the couple got a divorce in 1973. He remarried in 1975 to Micheline Roquebrune. He has only one child, Jason Connery, who, like his father, is also an actor who has appeared in shows like Robin of Sherwood.
