Samantha Mumba has been in the limelight for a pretty long time and for different reasons at different times. As a teenager, she gained prominence in 2000 with the release of her hit debut single “Gotta Tell You”, a song which has been recognized by Billboard as one of the 100 Catchiest Choruses of the Century. She went on to release her highly successful debut album Gotta Tell You and also picked up a Grammy nomination in 2001.

While she remains fairly active on the music scene, Mumba has since delved into other aspects of showbiz. She has been an actress, a fashion model as well as a TV presenter. She marked her film debut in the 2002 Sci-fi flick The Time Machine and has recorded several other acting credits ever since. She has appeared on the British reality series Dancing on Ice as well as the talent show The Hit. In 2018, the multitalented star became a panellist on the British panel show Loose Women.

Career as a Singer

At the age of 15, Samantha Mumba took part in a talent show tagged Let Me Entertain You on Ireland’s RTÉ TV. There, she was discovered by music executive Louis Walsh who eventually got her signed to Polydor Records. This marked the beginning of her professional music career and she spent the subsequent months moving between several European countries even as she started working on her debut album.

After many months of hard work, Samantha Mumba took the music scene by storm with the release of her debut single Gotta Tell You in June 2000. The song was a massive success as it went on to top music charts across different European countries and also in the US. It peaked atop the US Billboard Hot Singles Sales chart and also reached number 4 position on the US Billboard Hot 100.

In a similar fashion, Mumba dropped her debut album Gotta Tell You in October 2000 which was equally a huge commercial success. The album topped music charts in the US and the UK and sold over 5 million copies across the world. The album was reissued in March 2001 with some of its songs remixed or edited. The talented singer also reached a major milestone when her single Baby, Come Over (This Is Our Night) was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Remixed Recording (Non-Classical). She was also nominated for the Choice Music: Breakout Artist Award at the 2001 Teen Choice Awards.

Despite the success of her debut album, Samantha Mumba’s efforts to record a follow-up album in 2002 did not come to fruition and she was later dropped from her music label. She released an 18-track compilation album The Collection on October 23, 2006, featuring singles from her debut album. In 2008, she worked with DJ and producer Micky Modelle on a remix of her hit single Gotta Tell You. The following year, she got featured by singer-songwriter Hill Zaini on the single Stay in the Middle.

Though she has not released any full body of music in recent times, Mumba has remained quite active on the music scene. She released the single Somebody Like Me in 2013 in association with the RTÉ talent show series The Hit. She also released another single Only Just Begun in 2014.
