Bio – Who Is Sam Shields The NFL Cornerback?

Sam Shields was born Samuel George Shields III to Sam Shields Jr. and Michelle Shields on the 8th of December, 1987 in Sarasota, Florida where he was raised. He attended the local Booker High School where he competed on the track & field, baseball, and football teams.

As a part of the track team, Shields was noted as one of the top sprinters in the state of Florida. He was notably part of the school relay team that won a state title but it was however in football that his heart laid as Shields excelled playing the wide receiver position. In his senior year, he recorded 67 receptions for 1,201 yards and 22 touchdowns, this propelled his team to the Class 3A Championship game. His performances earned him athletic scholarships from a number of reputable programs but Shields chose to remain in the state, settling for the University of Miami offer.

In his freshman year, Sam Shields started 7 of the 13 games he played and managed a total of 37 receptions which earned him an honorable mention on the Sporting News All-American freshman team. He was further named to the 2006 Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Football Team. In his sophomore year, Shields managed 27 receptions for 346 yards and 3 touchdowns, having started only 5 of the 10 games he played in. His fortunes changed in his junior year as he managed to feature in all 13 games but however recorded only 11 receptions for 124 yards and no touchdown.

As a senior, Sam Shields changed from playing as a wide receiver to cornerback. He enjoyed immediate success in his new position as he managed 41 tackles (28 solos) and one tackle for loss. This earned him the Nick Chickillo Most Improved Player Award on defense from his school as he headed to the NFL.

Following a run-in with the law, the projected seventh-round pick went undrafted in the 2010 NFL Draft but still received a number of offers from seven teams. Sam Shields went on to join the Green Bay Packers, where he played for seven years before being released, giving room for him to join the Los Angeles Rams in 2018.

His Family and Kids

Sam Shields has a daughter named Samyla Shields. It is not clear who the mother of the child is but Shields had her long before he became an NFL star. Samyla was reportedly the reason why her father was arrested on the 18th of March, 2010, in Sarasota, Florida. The University of Miami star, who was hoping to be snapped up in the 2010 NFL Draft, was arrested for misdemeanor possession of marijuana following the search of his grand mother’s home by law enforcement officials who suspected that drugs were being sold from the residence.

Shields was in the house at the time of his arrest to supposedly pick up his daughter when the raid was carried out. He was taken into custody along with other family members but was released the following day. Shields stated that he was falsely arrested and about a month later, the charges against him were dropped.

After getting into the NFL, Sam Shields got engaged to a lady named Melissa Lopez who is said to be an actress. The pair had dated for about three years and lived together in his home, having moved to Green Bay together, before Shields abruptly sent her packing in the middle of the night in 2012. The NFL star was said to have woken Lopez up in the middle of the night and threw $300 at her before ordering her to leave, claiming that he was no longer in love with her and had begun seeing another person. According to reports, Shields later invited the lady back into the home a couple of months later, only to later move out his things and leave her in the apartment with nothing.

Since that incident, there have been no reports regarding the cornerback’s off-field antics and it is not clear if he and Lopez have patched things up.
