Sally Yates is an American attorney who during the Obama administration served as the US Deputy Attorney General from January 2015 to January 2017. She was thrust deep into the limelight for refusing to acknowledge Trump‘s executive order on immigration which led to her firing as the Acting US Attorney General, a position she served for just 10 days under the Trump-led administration. Here is everything you need to know about Sally Yates.

Sally Yates Bio (Wiki)

Sally Yates was born Sally Caroline Quillian on August 20, 1960, in Atlanta, Georgia. She hails from a family of attorneys. Sally’s father named John Kelley Quillian was a judge and served on the Georgia Court of Appeals between 1966 and 1984. Unfortunately, Sally’s father committed suicide shortly after he retired from service. Her mother, Xara “Mickey” DeBeaugrine Quillian (née Terrell) was an interior designer. She died in 2012 at the age of 81.

Sally’s grandmother was one of the first women to be admitted to the Georgia Bar. However, she was alive at the time when women were not allowed to be attorneys, thus she never really represented anyone, instead, she served as a legal secretary to her husband, Sally’s grandfather. She also served as a secretary to her son John (Sally’s father) and Sally’s brother. Sally has a sister named Terre Quillian. She is a Republican and runs a political radio show in Alabama. Terre supported President Trump during his campaign.

Sally Yates attended the University of Georgia where she earned her first degree, a Bachelor of Arts in journalism in 1982. Yates didn’t pursue a career in journalism but instead chose to study law at the University of Georgia School of Law where she graduated magna cum laude in 1986. During her school years, Yates served as the executive editor of the Georgia Law Review. She worked part-time while schooling and also she served as the staff assistant for Democrat Congressman Jack Brinkley.

After earning her J.D, Yates landed her first job as an associate at the Atlanta law firm, King & Spalding. She specialized in commercial litigation until 1989, when she left to join the US Department of Justice after she was hired by U.S. Attorney Bob Barr, a Republican.

Yates rose to helm the Fraud and Public Corruption Section in 1994 and in 2002, she became First Assistant U.S. Attorney. Two years later in 2004, then Acting U.S. Attorney and in May 2010, following her nomination by President Obama, she became U.S. Attorney in the Northern District of Georgia, making her the first woman to rise to the position from the district.

After being fired by Trump as the Acting United States Attorney General, Sally Yates began lecturing at Georgetown University Law Center. Additionally, she resumed working for King & Spalding where she had begun her legal career.

Sally is married to J. Comer Yates who is also a lawyer. However, his primary occupation is teaching. Comer Yates, fresh out of college (Emory University, Atlanta) in 1974 began teaching in a high school. Sally’s husband spent two decades teaching at Atlanta’s Daniel McLaughlin Therrell High School. It was during his time at the school that he earned a Juris Doctor. He would later teach at Emory’s School of Law.

Unlike his wife Sally who has shied away from political office (she declined to run for governor in 2018 upon suggestions by Georgia Democrats), Comey, as a Democrat gave it two shots in the mid-1990s, unfortunately, he lost both times. His first run for office came in 1994 when he ran to represent Georgia’s 4th congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives. He lost to Republican, John Linder.

Comer ran for the office again in 1996 but failed again, losing to fellow Democrat, Cynthia McKinney who had gained the support of Bill Campbell, Atlanta’s mayor at the time. Though Sally’s husband has not run for office again since then, he has managed to remain active in politics. He supported Obama during his two campaigns for the nation’s highest office, donating over $3,000, making him one of Obama’s top donors.

Comer now dedicates his time to giving speeches on literacy and speaking while serving as the executive director for the Atlanta Speech School, the nation’s “most comprehensive center for language and literacy” which was founded in 1938. Comer assumed the position in 1998.
