Ryan Phillippe is an actor, producer, and director who became popular after he played Billy Douglas in the ABC’s series, One Life To Live. He has featured in a plethora of movies and TV series’ roles since then. He began acting in the early 1990s and has since been on the big screens.

The American actor was born Matthew Ryan Phillipe in New Castle, Delaware, U.S.A on September 10, 1974. He wasn’t exactly born with a silver spoon but he wasn’t from a poor background either. He was born by a nurse, Susan, who ran a day care center in Ryan’s family house and Richard Phillippe, a chemistry technician. Ryan has three sisters, Kirsten, Lindsay, and Katelyn. He is of mixed ethnicity, comprising of German, English, French, and Scottish.

Not much is known about his elementary and high school education, however, it is known that he attended New Castle Christian Academy in Wilmington, Delaware. Reports indicate that he had an interest in acting as a child. He also had an interest in martial arts and obtained a black belt in Taekwondo.

Career

He began his career when he was signed under the agency, Cathy Parker Management, located at Voorhees, New Jersey. In most documentations about Ryan’s career, his first acting role under this agency was always referred to as Billy Douglas in the series One Life To Live. However, before Ryan played the role of Billy, he featured in The Secrets of Lake Success as Stew Atkins. Although this appears to be his first film, he is most popular for the role he played in the ABC series One Life To Live which aired from 1968 to 2013. He played the role of an openly gay teen on the series from April 1992 to May 1993.

In 1995, he moved to Los Angeles and continued the pursue his acting career. He took minor roles in the series Matlock, Due South and in the movies Crimson Tide and the 1996 movie, White Squall. In the next year, he starred in the horror movie, I Know What You Did Last Summer alongside fellow actresses, Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Jennifer Love Hewitt. The movie was critically acclaimed and recorded huge success, hence, contributing to Ryan’s increased popularity.

Ryan Phillippe has also starred in top-notch movies such as Cruel Intentions opposite his future ex-wife, Reese Witherspoon and 54. 54 was written and directed by Mark Christopher and it revolves around the life of a young man who moved from New Jersey to New York to become a barista at a club called Studio 54.

The 1990s were successful for the American actor and so were the 2000s. In 2000, he got a role in the crime drama series The Way of the Gun as Parker, one of its lead roles. The next year saw Ryan playing the role of Milo Hoffman, a software engineer who unravels the dirty secrets of a corrupt organization he works for in the super thriller film, Antitrust.

Subsequently, he co-starred in Gosford Park (2001) and took a few other roles as supporting characters in movies such as Igby Goes Down (2002), The I Inside (2003) and Crash (2004). Some of these movies were big shots and were nominated for the Oscar Awards. In 2006, he appeared in the war film Flags of Our Fathers. Its ploy was wrapped around the US Marines that fought at Iwo Jima. This was one of his best acting experiences as he would later admit. He also starred in Breach as Eric O’Neill, an FBI agent.

Ryan has efficiently delivered several types of roles in war and crime movies, as well as drama and comedy thrillers. In addition to being an actor, he is also a producer and director. In 2010, Ryan and two other producers formed a group called the Lucid films, since then he has worked as an executive producer at the cable station, Showtime. He made his directorial debut with the release of the movie Catch Hell in 2012. It wasn’t much of a success and had mostly negative reviews, however, he also produced a documentary titled Isolated.

Most recently, he has been cast to play the role of the protagonist in an action thriller series titled Shooter. The actor has been playing the character, Bob Lee Swager.

The couple had 2 children, a daughter, and a son. A little over 7 years after their marriage, a divorce was filed and in 2008 it was made official.
