Ron Rivera is someone who has made a name for himself in the National Football League (NFL), first as a player, then as a defensive coordinator, and also as a coach. He made the NFL draft in 1984, and since then, he has become an important part of the sport. Here is all to know about him.

Ron Rivera’s Bio, Ethnicity

It was as Ronald Eugene Rivera that he was born on January 7, 1962, in Fort Ord, California. He was brought up in different places as his father, Eugenio Rivera was a military officer, hence, he had to keep moving from place to place as he was posted.

For his education, he spent his early days in different places including Germany, Panama, and the United States. Nonetheless, the family would later settle in California where he would attend and graduate from the Seaside High School. By the time he was through, his talent had helped him to secure a scholarship to the University of California, Berkeley.

As regards his ethnicity, he is of Puerto Rican descent even as he is an American by nationality. He was brought up alongside 3 other brothers. There was also his brother, Mickey, who he lost to cancer in 2015.

What would bring Ron Rivera to the limelight is as stated, his activities with football which began even before he went to college. Having made a very successful college football career, he got selected in 1984 by the Chicago Bears in the year’s NFL draft. By 1985, he was already playing in the league and became a part of the team that won the 1985 Super Bowl.

Since his draft, it was the Chicago Bears that he remained with until 1992 when he retired from the sports as a player. Apart from the Super Bowl, he was also named East-West Shrine Game MVP, a part of the Consensus All-American team, and he got the Pop Warner Trophy as far back as 1983.

After his days as a player ended, Ron worked for some time with the media before coming back to work with the bears as the defensive quality control coach. That was in 1996, and by 1999, the Philadelphia Eagles had taken him to work as a linebackers coach. In 2004, Ron was back to the Chicago Bears as a Defensive coordinator. He would hold the position until he was off to the San Diego Chargers where he worked as the linebackers coach in 2008, and defensive coordinator from 2008 to 2010.

Carolina Panthers was the next place that would be his base from 2011 when he was made the head coach of the team. Even though he is yet to win the Super Bowl, he has led them to the finals in 2016. More so, he has won a number of personal accolades including the AP NFL Coach of the Year in 2013 and 2015, as well as the PFWA NFL Coach of the Year in the same period.

Ron is not the only member of his family who is into sports as Stephanie used to also be a sportswoman in her days in the University of California where she played basketball. After they first met, she had him invite some guys to play basketball against her female team. Soon afterwards, they started dating.

Less than 5 months after they started dating, Stephanie and Ron knew they were ready to spend their lives together and that led to an engagement. By 1984, they were joined in marriage as man and wife. The union has been blessed with a son, Christopher, and a daughter, Courtney.
