The name “Renate” or phrase “Renate Alumni” was further mentioned in the book a total of 14 times by different classmates of Kavanaugh. Other phrases like “Renate’s Suicide Squad” and “Chairman of the Bored of Renate Club” were also used.

Following the revelation of the meaning of the phrase “Renate Alumnus” by The New York Times, Renate Schroeder Dolphin revealed that she was not aware of all the references to her in the yearbook, including one that appeared under the photo of the members of the Georgetown football team, when she signed the letter supporting Kavanaugh. In her statement, she said she does not know what “Renate Alumnus” actually means, but cannot begin to “comprehend what goes through the minds of 17-year-old boys who write such things.” She went on to say that the insinuation is “horrible, hurtful and simply untrue,” and would not wish such a thing on the daughters of all those behind it.

In an interview with Buzzfeed, Renate further revealed that she was not among the women who put the letter together but only received it from another friend from their high school days after which she went on to put her signature on it.

Following the prolonged Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, Brett Kavanaugh apologized to Renate and both parties have since reiterated that they did not have any sexual encounter. His lawyers, however, went on to mention that the two only attended a high school event together after which they shared a brief goodnight kiss which was their only encounter. Renate later denied this claim, saying that there was no truth to the statement.
