Queen Sugar is a popular American drama TV series executive-produced by Ava DuVernay, Melissa Carter and Oprah Winfrey and based on Natalie Baszile’s 2014 novel of the same title. The series premiered on September 6, 2016, and airs on Oprah Winfrey Network. Three years down the line, it is in its fourth season and a Queen Sugar season 5 is underway. The fifth installment has been billed for 2020 and while you wait for it, here are facts to keep in mind.
The Storyline Of The Series
Queen Sugar revolves around the activities of three siblings in rural Louisiana: Nova Bordelon (Rutina Westley), Charley Bordelon (Dawn-Lyen Gardner) and Ralph Angel Bordelon (Kofi Siriboe). Following the demise of their father, his 800-acre sugarcane farm located in Louisiana was shockingly bequeathed to Charley who is divorced from her marriage. She takes her son along with her and relocates to the center of rural Louisiana to operate the farmstead.
The series receives positive reviews from critics based on its plot that hinges and tackles global issues like culture, class, and gender while beaming its light on several elements addressing key concerns for the Black society in America with its predominantly Black Cast. The main theme of the series is highlighted in the episodes which center on racial stereotyping/profiling, the long reach of Chattel slavery in American history and the disparities in America’s justice system, as well as a host of other challenges related to African-Americans.
As mentioned above, OWN, in September 2019 announced the renewal of the series for a fifth season which is slated for 2020. Here is a list of the cast and characters that would be returning to the show:
Queen Sugar Season 5: Cast And Characters Who Are Returning
Kofi Siriboe portrays one of the main characters in the series, thus, it will be difficult not to see him in the fifth season. Playing the role of Ralph Angel Bordelon, the only son and the youngest sibling of the Bordelon family, we would all agree that his character is not the type that just dies off. The young man has been in crisis with himself and has just been released from prison; he is a single father and without a job, struggling to raise his son and is now he is seeking ways to build and better his lot. One thing though, is that he is strongly tied to family land.
Gardner is also a key star in the series who is also going to be returning to the show in the fifth season. She has been playing the role of Charlotte “Charley” Bordelon West, the second child of the Bordelon family, though she was conceived from an affair. She was working as a sports manager in Los Angeles; a wife to Davis West and a mother to Micah, she had to relocate to rural Louisiana with her son following her father’s demise and her divorce from West. She’s a half-sibling to Nova and Ralph Angel. One interesting thing though – her late father willed the 800-acre farmland to her.
Tina Lifford, playing the role of Violet Bordelon, is another star who would appear in season 5 of the series. She’s one of the daughters of the Bordelon children. Now, she stands as the matriarch of the family and stays with her young looking lover and dandy, Hollywood.
Omar J. Dorsey
So long as Tina Lofford’s character is still returning to Queen Sugar Season 5, so will Mr. Loverboy Hollingsworth “Hollywood” Desonier played by Dorsey. He is a very young oil rig worker, a boyfriend to Violet, and a family friend to the Bordelons.
Ashe’s character is one of those that would be coming back for Queen Sugar Season 5, simply because his mother is there. He plays the role of Micah, the teenage son of Charley and Davis West. Following the demise of his grandfather and his parents’ divorce; he follows his mother Charley to Louisiana.
Dondre T. Whitefield
He plays the role of Remy Newell, who works as an irrigation specialist and a close friend and confidante of Ernest. His closeness to the Bordelons sees him being attached to his friend’s grownup children and it didn’t take long for him to become Charley’s love interest. Season five will definitely be a burner.

Henry G. Sanders
Henry Sanders plays the role of Prosper Denton. He has been friends with Ernest for a lifetime; he is also a farmer and first appeared in season 3. He’s sure going to be back in season 5 of the series and we can,t wait to see what he will be bringing to the table.
She is also one of the main stars in the series who has been playing the role of Nova Bordelon, the eldest sibling of Boderlon’s children. She is a journalist and activist. She would most likely be returning in Queen Sugar Season 5 as her fans would love to see her again.
