Patrick Willis is a popularly known professional American football player who retired from active play due to a series of extensive and recurrent injuries. Before the unfortunate performance hampering injuries, Patrick was poised to achieve greatness which was visible from his display of promising talents right from his high school days as a linebacker up to his continued impressive performance in his collegiate years.
His feats earned him laudable recognitions such as consensus All-American honors, the Jack Lambert Award, and the Butkus Award which are all given to the nation’s top linebackers. By the time Willis was done with college, he was drafted in the very first round of the 2007 National Football League (NFL) draft by the 49ers, he played for the team as a linebacker and below is an account of his career and personal life.
Patrick Willis Bio, Age
Patrick .L. Willis was born to Loretta Lynn Anderson and Ernest Willis in Bruceton, Tennessee, on the 25th of January 1985. Growing up was very tough for him as he was surrounded by extreme poverty. As early as the age of ten, he had to work in cotton fields full-time in order to cater for himself and his younger siblings. This was because his father, Ernest Willis was an alcoholic who was unassumingly violent and careless towards his family. By the time Patrick was 17 years old, he took his brothers (Orey and Detris) and sister (Ernicka) out of their trailer park home to live with his high school basketball coach Chris Finley and his wife Julie. This was due to their father’s worsened aggression towards them.
While he was in Hollow Rock-Bruceton Central High School, Patrick Willis earned himself a few titles including; Regional Most Valuable Player, West Tennessee Player of the Year and a two-time All-State selection. He also earned three letters in baseball and four letters in football as well as basketball. By the time he was done with high school in 2003, he was ranked in the 60th position as a linebacker and was named a three-star recruit by Rivals.com.
After completing high school, Patrick Willis chose to further his higher education at the University of Mississippi. He quickly joined the school’s football team, “Ole Miss Rebels,” and also had the chance to make 20 stops over 13 game appearance as a freshman. Before graduating in 2006, he was named into the College Football Hall of Fame as well as the first-team All-SEC honors.
To kick-start his professional career, the college football star got drafted as the 11th pick in the first round of the 2007 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers. His career got off fine and in 2010, he signed a seven-year deal worth $53.51 million with the 49ers. Soon enough, troubles with injuries would take a toll on his career and emotional stability as he first sustained a major fracture on his hand during camp training on the 5th of August 2013. After a successful surgery, Patrick would later experience a groin injury just after 3 weeks of recovery thus ending the 2013 season with a total of 104 tackles.
For the 2014 season, a toe injury made him play only six games in total. It also forced him to abruptly end the season on the 11th of November in order to undergo surgery to fix the disturbing pain on the big toe of his left foot. As a result of this, Patrick Willis was placed on the injured reserve list and this caused him to be practically sidelined for the most part of the 2014 season. On the 10th of March 2015, Patrick announced his retirement from professional football.
It is no hidden secret that athletes mostly involved in a contact sport such as American football tend to live a life of luxury majorly due to how hefty they are paid. Starting out his professional career with a mouth-watering deal of over $50 million with the 49ers, Patrick Willis has since accumulated wealth to record a whopping $6 million as his net worth. This was a figure that was bound to increase but due to his early retirement from the NFL it was truncated. Probably, his net worth can still surge with earnings from other things he does outside of his now ended football career.
