With over half of the film festivals for the year nearly done, there has been an increased level of anticipation towards the next award season which, as usual, would begin with the Oscars. Following a couple of technical changes, the Oscars announced that it would hold its event a couple of weeks earlier than usual with the confirmed date being the 9th of February 2020 with the nominations list revealed on January 13th. As usual, many movie experts have begun dishing out their predictions based on their observation at the film festivals. Usually, factors considered to determine a likely contender for an Oscar include critical review, the pedigree of the production house and filmmakers and lots more. Based on reviews by expert critics, here is a look at the Oscars 2020 predictions featuring the movies that have been considered top contenders for the most coveted categories.

Oscars 2020 Predictions: Best Movies That Will Potentially Win Big

Jojo Rabbit

This war comedy-drama which tells the story of what happens when a boy who is part of Hitler’s army discovers his mom is hiding a Jewish girl in their home. It has been speculated to be a major contender with the possibility of nomination in 7 categories including Best Picture, Best Director for Taika Waititi and Best Supporting actress for Scarlett Johansson or Thomasin McKenzie.

Parasite

The South Korean mystery drama film is perhaps one of the biggest foreign film contenders in the Oscars 2020 predictions. Particularly, its director Bong Joon-ho has been predicted to appear in the Best Director’s category. With a perfect 100% Rotten Tomatoes score, it is expected to win the Best International Feature Film and Best Original screenplay.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

Set in Hollywood’s Golden age, the comedy-drama follows a once famed star striving to make it again in Hollywood. It’s director, Quentin Tarantino, is expected to win his first Oscar for Best Picture while Brad Pitt has been said to be a strong contender for Best Supporting actor.

1917

This war film will be director Sam Mendes’ first post-007 film and critics have only but nice things to say about it. It tells the story of two young British soldiers tasked with the mission of delivering a lifesaving message right in the enemy’s territory. It has been predicted for Best Picture, Cinematography, Original Score and Film editing.

The Report

The film has largely received positive reviews with many lauding the performance of Adam Driver who has been predicted to win Best Actor and Annette Bening for Best supporting actress. There is also a possibility for Best Picture and Best original screenplay.

Little Women

Many Oscars 2020 predictions say that Greta Gerwig‘s Little Women could make it to at least 8 nominations from Best Picture to Best Directing (For Gerwig), Best costume as well as Best Actress and Supporting Actress for Saoirse Ronan and Florence Pugh who have both been credited for giving life to the film. It tells the story of four women who have come of age during the aftermath of the American civil war.

The Irishman

This Martin Scorsese film, according to Oscar 2020 predictions, would be a contender for major categories. The plot follows a hitman and his possible involvement with the murder of labor leader, Jimmy Hoffa. It features an ensemble cast whose performances have experts speculating that they could win the big awards. Scorsese is predicted for Best Director, Robert De Niro for Best Actor, Al Pacino for Best Supporting Actor, as well as Anna Paquin as Best Supporting Actress. The Best Picture win is also not ruled out.

Joker

The rave reviews of Joker has everything to do with the portrayal of its titular character played by Joaquin Phoenix who has been predicted to be a contender for Best Actor. There are also speculations for a possible Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay win. It follows a failed comedian who begins to mastermind crimes.

A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood

This is a biopic of the kids’ TV star, Mister Rogers; it is adored for its difference from regular biopics where the movie isn’t centered directly on Rogers but on a journalist and Roger’s importance in the journalist’s life. Two-time Oscar winner Tom Hanks, who portrays the red-cardigan wearing Rogers, is predicted to get an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. The film has also been predicted to win Best Picture, Best Director and even more.

Other Oscars 2020 Predictions

In addition to the above listed, over a handful of other movies have been speculated to win big. They include Waves for Best Director which would make 30-year-old Trey Edward Shults the youngest to win an Oscar for Best Director. Waves also stands the chance at Best Picture and maybe Best Supporting Actor nomination for Sterling K. Brown.

Both Marriage Story and The Farewell have both been predicted for Best Picture, Best Director as well as a possibility for lead and supporting acting awards for the actors and actresses.
