Naomi Scott’s Fact Sheet
Early Life and Education
The actress was born Naomi Grace Scott to Usha Joshi and Christopher Scott on the 6th of May 1993. She is a native of Hounslow, London and was raised alongside an older brother, Joshua Scott. The Disney star was raised in a Christian family by missionary parents. This means that her childhood consists of participating in missionary and outreach works. More so, she had her first introduction to public singing in church as a member of the Bridge Church Youth Band, where her parents are pastors.
For her education, she attended Davenant Foundation School in Loughton, Essex, where she also performed regularly in the school musical and drama productions. During her time as a member of her church and school choir, she was discovered by the singer, Kelle Bryan. From there, the actress/singer began her journey to fame for which she has become incredibly successful.
Naomi Scott is of Indian Gujarati Descent
Naomi Scott might be British, but she has quite an interesting ethnic background. While her father is of English origin, her mother is of Indian Gujarati descent. Even more interesting is the fact that her mother was born and raised in an African country, Uganda.
Her diverse ethnic background not only makes her a citizen of the world but also places her in a position to play different ethnic roles onscreen — an advantage she has already used as Princess Jasmine in Aladdin.
Her Road to Stardom
After Kelle Bryan signed her as a client, Naomi Scott began working with British songwriters and the producers, Xenomania. Her music career kicked off in 2014 when she released her debut music project, the EP, Invisible Division. Since then, she has released another EP project, Promises, which was published in August 2016. Naomi has also worked with other artistes, independently, as well as being a part of a TV/Film soundtrack.
While music brought her initial fame, it is her acting career that has made her an international star. She debuted as an actor in 2009, in the show, Life Bites, featuring in eleven episodes. Thereafter, Naomi made her feature-length movie debut two years later in 2011 when she appeared as Mohini in Lemonade Mouth. She returned to TV shows in the same year, with Terra Nova, playing Mandy Shannon.
The actress made a series of appearances across other projects like Hello, Again, By Any Means, and The 33 (2015). However, none of them were the breakthrough roles she hoped for. Her attempt at another role in the 2015 popular film, The Martian, was equally unsuccessful. Her filmed scenes were cut from the final release.
Despite this, she was named among Stars of Tomorrow by Screen International. It did not take very long for that title to come to fruition. She was cast in the film adaptation of the Power Rangers show in 2015. However, the film was eventually released in 2017. While the film received mixed commercial and critical success, it brought Naomi Scott to the attention of a broad audience.
Her Role as Princess Jasmine Remains Her Biggest So Far
Naomi Scott’s ultimate stardom eventually came two years after the release of Power Rangers. She was cast as Princess Jasmine in the 2019 live-action remake of the Disney classic, Aladdin. The film was a critical success, with her role as one of the standout performances in the movie.
She earned award nominations from the Teen Choice Awards, Saturn Awards, and the HMMA for her performance in the global hit. The film was also commercially successful, earning $1 billion at the global box office, and turning the British actress into a worldwide star. Since the success of Aladdin, Naomi Scott has appeared in other works like the reboot of Charlie’s Angels (2019), where she played Elena Houghlin.
Are There More Princess Roles in Naomi Scott’s Future?
Having achieved global popularity in her role as Princess Jasmine, with a performance that brought much-needed depth to the character, it is worth wondering if she will be reprising her role in any future project.
So far, while we do know there is a sequel to the $1 billion-film in the works, nothing has been confirmed regarding Naomi Scott’s return to the character. However, it is expected she will return, having been one of the film’s standout performers.
