In the 2010s, a time in which numerous African music stars were able to heavily collaborate with their western counterparts, much of the western world was fixated on music genres like kwaito and afrobeat coming out of the continent. During that time, however, there was also an upsurge in K-pop and other genres of popular music from South Korea. The increase in the popularity of Kpop has given rise to talents such as the members of MXM, a band that has created top of the chart music and also garnered award nominations both in their home country and the Asian continent as a whole.
Profile of MXM Members
MXM consists of two musical talents, Lim Young-min and Kim Dong-hyun, who were both former trainees of hip hop company Brand New Music which later gave them their breakthrough.
1. Lim Young-min
Lim Young-min serves as the rapper of MXM, although he is also a singer and songwriter. He was born on the 25th of December, 1995. Not much about his early life is known as the earliest details of his life available to the public starts in 2017 when he participated in the boy group reality survival show Produce 101 Season 2.
While he managed to get to the final episode, Young-min was eliminated in that round, ranking 15th overall.
2. Kim Dong-hyun
Kim Dong-hyun was born on the 17th of September 1998. Serving as the primary singer of the group, the musician is reported to have begun honing his craft at a very young age by also learning how to play the guitar. Like his future band member, Dong-hyun represented Brand New Music in the reality show but was eliminated before the finale took place.
Following the end of the reality show that denied them a spot in the project unit Wanna One, Brand New Music announced that the pair would be teaming up as a unit called MXM. In July 2017, the duo released a two-track promotional single that saw them gain the attention of the public and build anticipation towards their upcoming project.
On the 6th of September 2017, MXM released their debut EP titled Unmix. The extended play contained seven tracks and went on to peak at the number 3 spot on the South Korean music chart, a clear indication that their music was going to be well received by the public. On the 10th of January 2018, MXM released their second EP titled Match Up, which contained a total of six tracks and also peaked at number 3 like their previous effort.
The success the duo has achieved so far prompted their record label to sign off on them releasing their first full-length album titled More Than Ever on August 14, 2018. Unlike their two EPs, however, the album only reached the number 5 spot on the chart.
Other Facts About The Musical Duo

According to the reports put out by their record label, “More x More” refers to the determination the pair has to develop as a duo, while “Mix and Match” speaks about their individual compatibility as a group.
2. MXM has been able to headline their own tours. In September 2018, a year after they participated in Brand New Music’s annual concert, “Brand New World Seoul”, the duo headlined their own tour, The More Than Ever Tour, in 2018.
Around that same time, they received multiple award nominations in the category of New Artist from the Gaon Chart Music Awards, Golden Disc Awards, and Seoul Music Awards.
3. While it is not clear if MXM as a duo has been dissolved, it was announced in 2019 that both Lim Young-min and Kim Dong-hyun would be making up another five-member Brand New Music boy band called AB6IX (short for Absolute Six). The duo teamed up with Jeon Woong, Park Woo-jin, and Lee Dae-hwi, who were all former trainees of their record label, to release the AB6IX debut EP titled B Complete in May 2019.
