Morgan Freeman’s Bio
Morgan Freeman was born on June 1, 1937, in Memphis, Tennessee to Mayme Edna a teacher and Morgan Freeman Sr. a barber. His parents had 3 other kids older than him and are Afro-Americans, a DNA analysis revealed that some of his ancestors may be from Niger – a country in West Africa. At an early age, Morgan was sent off to live with his maternal grandmother in Charleston, Mississippi. He attended Broad Street High School Mississippi from where he graduated in 1955.
Freeman lived most of his early years not just in Mississipi but also in Gary, Indiana; Chicago and Illinois.
Freeman’s acting career began quite early, this is because he has always had a love for the arts. He was active on his school’s drama team. At the age of 12, young Morgan won a statewide drama competition. But after High school, he joined the U.S Air Force, hoping to become a fighter pilot, when this didn’t happen, he left the force and moved down to L.A. where he enroled in an acting/dancing class.
By mid-1960, he joined a musical theater group – Opera Ring. His first debut was in the stage play – The Royal Hunt Of The Sun. By 1967, Freeman made his first off-Broadway appearance in the play The Nigger Lovers – this gave birth to his Broadway debut in Hello Dolly in 1968.
By 1970, Morgan Freeman began appearing on a television program for children titled The Electric Company. The show ran till 1977 and made Freeman a household name in the entertainment industry. His major breakthrough, however, came in 1985 when he starred in the movie – Street Smart – the movie fetched him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. Then came the box office hits Driving Miss Daisy and Glory in 1989. Driving Miss Daisy earned him an Oscar nomination.
Freeman has starred in so many other prominent movies including Prince of Thieves, Robin Hood, The Shawshank Redemption (for which he received another Oscar nomination), Bruce Almighty, Seven, Deep Impact and many others. In 2009, he portrayed former South African president Nelson Mandela in Invictus – a sports drama directed by Clint Eastwood.

Freeman has been married and divorced twice. His first marriage which lasted just two-years was to Jeanette Adair Bradshaw. After his marriage failed, Freeman was single for five-year before tying the knots again in 1984 and this time to Myrna Colley-Lee. They were married for over two decades before officially calling it quit in 2010. Before his marriage to Adair Bradshaw, Freeman already had two sons from a previous relationship.
He adopted Bradshaw’s daughter after their marriage and they also had a child together. After his divorce from Bradshaw, Freeman and Colley-Lee adopted E’dena Hines – his step-granddaughter from his first marriage, and they both raised her together.
